Hi all,

System:

Coolermaster CM Stacker (i know very old case)
Intel core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHZ
Asus Maximus Extreme Intel x38 (Socket 775) PCIE – DDR3
Patrtiot G Series Sector 5 4GB
ATI Radeon X1900 & XTX - Crossfire
Enermax infinity 720w (Modular)

Slowly over the years my X1900's have been falling to bits , the pins on the 1900x crossfire cable have broke off in the thread holes etc.

So payday tomorrow I've a budget of £350 MAX

I was planning on getting a ATI 5870 (single) but i have been told that if i crossfire 5850's i get more bang for my buck than getting two 5870's?

I know that my X1900's add up as 1GB in total but will 1 5870 own them both?

hold out for a bit, very likely the prices will come down for ATi cards if the NV cards prove competitive, or the NV ends up a better buy

will all be clear soon

It's conjecture, plus a lot of the price increases are down to the retailers taking advantage of no competition.

I'd still wait and see, I don't think it's a good idea to buy components so close to new lines being introduced from a rival if you could end up paying a bit more than waiting a week, or getting a better product from the rival for the same cash.

ahh right i knew the new gfx card were coming out .. didn't know when .. righty :) ill wait :D

If you're not bothered if in the next 2-4 weeks they might drop £20 - £60 then go for it. The figures I have put are only me guessing at what they might drop though.

As for power compared to your X1900s (great cards btw in their day). Well, all I can say it's a pretty mahoossive jump :D.

8800GTX is about the same as two X1900s. SInce 8800GTX there has been GTX 260 (30-40% faster than 8800GTX) then the GTX 295 is two GTX 275s and the 5870 is just on the heels of the GTX 295.

As I said "mahoossive jump :D".

Think most people are now swaying towards the 5870`s mate. I certainly am but I still dont know which one to get.

Think if the ASUS was to drop below £300 then I would get that. Come on Overclockers work your magic! lol

Don't wait, Fermi is unlikely to change ATI pricing as Nvidia arent competative.

5850cf is great value, 5870 is great.

I guess a single 5850 will spank your x1900cf

^ i hope so..lol the wife has NO idea im buying it though ... dum dum dummm ..lol

good going m8 =) got one of those coming soon as well. I have to ask though, do the Sapphire cards come with voltage tweak? I'd like to get mine up past 1ghz

If that Q6600 is at stock I would have just gone for a cheap 5850 in all honesty, every one will clock beyond a 5870 at stock, and some within 10% of the top end 5870 overclock.

oh well too late anyway .. plan to get another 5870 in 3 weeks to crossfire

Mp4 you should really overclock the Q6600. The chances are the amount of data that stock Q6600 sending over to the 5870 doesn't even go above 50% GPU usage for processing. You need to increase the speed of Q6600 so that data can be sent over to the GPU faster and give them more work to process.

I'll give another example of the significant of CPU speed in relating to fps for games.
HD5870, 4GB Corsair 800Mhz DDR2, 4GB Corsair 1,600Mhz DDR3
Crysis (DirectX 10, 64-Bit, High) at 1,680x1,050

[email protected] (stock speed)=12-35fps
Q6600 [email protected]=24-45fps
[email protected] (stock speed)=19-36fps
E8400 [email protected]=27-48fps
Phenom II X4 965 BE (C3 stepping) @3.4Ghz (stock speed)=23-46fps
Phenom II X4 965 BE (C3 stepping) [email protected] =29-52fps
Core i5 [email protected] (stock speed)=20-50fps
Core i5 750 [email protected]

The results may be two months old, but the logic behind it remains the same.

If you dont overclock it to at least 3.6GHz I will come round and poke you in the eyes a couple of times then do it for you :) :L

cross fire 5870 vaporX's and oc them to 1000Mhz Drool

im in a happy mood my SIA Door license has just been granted so new job loads more money to spend on GPUs :) woo going for duel 5970's myself.
