Just looking for some advice as I'm starting to think now my setups coming up to 4 yrs old its maybe time for a refresh.

Current specs are
Intel i5 3570k
AMD 7850 gfx
8gb RAM
120gb SSD HD
1tb HD

I dont play FPS as some make me feel sick but do enjoy a dabble on other things like the division, diablo 3, company of heroes 2 etc.

I'm thinking I could get a new gfx card now & then do a CPU, mobo & RAM later. Just wondering if you think this is a good plan & if so what GFX card to go for? I'm swaying towards a 1060 but no idea which brand or would a different card be better?

I'd also like to upgrade from my old 24" 60hz monitor possibly as some stage, no idea what to but worth bearing in mind.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys

That cpu is good for a while yet (2500K or above = worth hanging on to for now unless, of course, you really need hyperthreading). In your shoes, I would upgrade the monitor and get a new graphics card.

Is your PSU up to scratch?

What is your budget?

If your cpu isn't overclocked then definitely look into that.

as above id go for a gpu and monitor went from 60hz screen to 120 and never looked back, 60hz feels so broken now

im still rocking a 2500k and 2600k and dont see any need to upgrade anytime soon although running an overclock does help, depends on your usage i guess

The PSU is 550w so hopefully thats still good enough for a new GFX card?

Budget wise, I wouldnt want to be spending too much over £300 unless its really worth it? Obviously less is better but can stretch if its worth it.

Monitor wise I dont know where to start, currently running an old iiyama prolite E2472hd thats probably 5-6yrs old.

What make is the psu?

I'd get the card now, then save up for a new monitor. I'll have a look for a card in a mo.

There is also the R9 Fury which is a little faster than the 480, though I think the difference between the two cards would be better spent towards a new screen. :)

As for the 1060s:

I'm not familiar with the acoustics of the smaller 1060s, though if I recall correctly the Palit one runs cool and quiet. In fact, I don't think temps or noise will be that much of a concern for many of the 1060s anyway.

I have the Zotac mini and unless you have really good airflow it'll hit over 80 when gaming heavily. It is quiet though, only hear it when the fan is nearing 100%.

I've got the Asus Turbo one with the blower fan, you can barely hear it.

A 550W PSU will be fine for a 1060, mine is 450W.

Just dug out an email of the PSU & its - Antec Basiq VP550P - Power supply ( internal ) - ATX12V 2.3 - 80 PLUS - AC 200-240 V - 550 Watt - active PFC

So assuming that's OK would the Zotac/Asus 1060's be the cards to go for over the AMD RX480?

You will need to overclock the 3570k to get the best out of cards like the RX 480 and GTX 1060. I think the VP550 should be OK with that and the new card.

The GTX1060 vs RX480 is a tough one. The GTX 1060 is faster in more DX11 games but it's poor in Vulcan and DX12. I would say the GTX 1060 is a better card for now, but the RX 480 will last a lot longer.

You also don't have the extra cost of a Gsync VVR monitor with the RX 480 as you do with the GTX1060 so that something to keep in mind seeing you want a monitor upgrade later on.

Dont plan on overclocking the CPU, just looking at splitting the upgrade into managable parts rather than doing an all in one like I've done in the past as my current machine is still hanging in there.

Maybe the RX480 is the way to go then if its better in DX12 and also reduces the cost on monitors. Speaking of which, any advice on them? Quite like the looks of these ultra widescreens but I've never used one or even seen one in the flesh so maybe its best to just stick with a regular 24/27"? Not sure where to start on this part tbh.

Yeah, there or there abouts, can go higher but dont want to spend loads.

Still assuming the RX 480 is THE card to go for :)

Yes, in my opinion it is. The 1060 6gb is a great card also, but there you'll be spending more of your budget on something that is only a little faster.

I'd get a 6gb 1060. Although I wouldn't blow the full £300 on one as £350 gets you a 1070 which is a lot faster.

But seriously, overclock that cpu. No point in having a K cpu and not overclocking it. It's what they are designed for ;)

In fact, I might even consider an RX 470 - so very nearly as fast as a 480, but would free up a little more cash towards the monitor. Either card will be more than twice the speed of your 7850.

Can't seem to find any 470s on here at the mo.
