Hey guys i wana upgrade my gfx card.
Basically i have a gtx 680 stock.
And i really am thinking of goin.
For an amd 290 not the x
Is it a really good card.
And i keep hearing about throttling
So if im correct does gaming performance of the card get knocked after a while?
And is it as loud as people say it is
 
AFAIK, it's only really the reference cooled cards that had issues with temps and throttling. They are no longer available so you will be okay with most cards.
 
Well thats the thing ive been offered a good deal on a stock reference one from either msi or gigabyte

The throttle issue that keep popping was general by people who don't even own the card who keep quoting the card in quiet mode (which would throttle when reaching 95C) in reviews. Use the card in performance mode, upping the power limit and set up a custom fanspeed profile should have no problem keeping the stock clock card between 80-90C max in a well-ventilated case.

Here's the result when I still have my 290(X) on the reference cooler with custom fanspeed and moderate overclock:

Max temp was just 81C, and fanspeed was 55% max (just under 3000rpm). I found at this fanspeed is acceptable if your PC was place on the floor, as long as you don't play your games on mute :rolleyes:; but for people who'd put their PC on their desk to their right at ear level, it would probably be too loud.
 
Great performance card, I would have kept mine if I had managed to get one that did not crash my system with black screens. By the third RMA I gave up and decided to buy an Nvidea instead.

The reference cards take a bit of tinkering with fan profiles to keep the noise and heat in check like Marine says. If you can afford it for for aftermarket cooler revision, I hear the Tri X is good but its massive, around 300mm if I remember right.

Damn the thing is im being offered a reference 290 for 100 an im just wondering wat u guys think i should do. An this throttling heat thing as it is bugging me. Im not great technically just want a gd card i can plug in and im happy lol
 
For £100 do it lol, you will easy be able to sell it any make your money back if you have any compatibility trouble.

The fan profiles are easy to set. Just go in Catalyst Control Centre and up the max fan speed to between 55 and 70% and lower your target temp somewhere between 70 and 80 degrees, it defaults to 94 which is a bit hot lol.

Also make sure you have a spare 2 PCI-E power ports on your PSU, try not to use a 2 in 1 if you can. and make sure you have the 275mm lengh clearance for the reference card.

You want a 650watt PSU minimum really
 
yea its my best friends hes had it for around 2 months now hes getting a titan black I think so hes offered it 2 me lol.
 
haha yea I kno the thing is I was looking at a b grade gigabyte 290 windforce aswell as I can afford it.
but im abit worried about the b grade is it worth it?
and most importantly is it trusted?
 
No the 290 not x version gigabyte windforce oc 259.99
I no its a gd deal its just the bloody noise with the reference card lol
 
If your worried about noise you could buy the £100 R290 off your friend then fit an after-market air or sealed water cooler and you will still end up paying half the cost of a new R290 with decent cooling.

I would buy both of the R9 290 cards,they are great cards.I have owned a few
of these cards and they run fine.

I am running R9 290 Crossfire with reference and Non-Reference card

Regular gaming BF4 max GPU fan speed 59%,max temp on reference card 74c.
