Ghetto GPU cooling? ^^, 56k users beware!

Not mine btw :p

Scythe Infinity on the CPU, graphics is the Noctua but I haven't got a clue whats on the northbridge (it isn't a freezer pro though).

Edit: NB cooler is listed as 'CPU Tower Heatsink', so they obviously don't know either :p

I would do the same if I had an open bench rig ;)
Too bad my room is small and I don't want it messy as well, so everything has to go into a case.

A guy mounted a Tonic tower on the X1900XT and it scored 43C under load, go figure. :D

haha just fitted a titan vanessa on a old radeon 9550 ...

it worked.. tried it in my old sempron system and as windows was loading.. all i heard was a bang and a crack :O

the heatsink snapped the card in half :')

i'll try get pics tomorrow.. :P

EDIT: i dont see how the heatsink snapped it in half.. the heatsink doesnt seem that heavy

@Raikiri : the noctua sure is big but does it has this cool AMD logo ? :p

Now that AMD has bought ATi, I shall let you all see the first AMD vid card, lol

You nutter. :D

Could you not fit some tweakmonster RAM sinks on that beastie just a thought.

How about a support coming up from the bottom of the case to the card it does look like its bending a fair bit.

I don't think the ram will fry without a heatsink on them, may as well though if you can. Oh and that heatsink is nothing compared to...

:D (I think it is a noctua 120 on there, not certain though)

Damn some crazy people :D
Whats the middle heatsink on?

LOL

I hope this explains it to all of you, so no more question on the bending of the card please, I tried my best :p

As I said, the base of the new revision of the cooler is substantially bigger, hence I cannot use the inner holes for mounting (the 4 at the 4 corners of the die itself), hence I had NO other choice but to use the outer holes, and route the ties around the heatpipes as supports, to hold the cooler down onto the card.

And when the zip ties are tightened, under the tension T, the card is bent a little bit, it's not the weight of the cooler lol. And the bending in fact is nothing such as suggested on the picture, I lined up with my eye sight on a straight line, at max it's about a few milimeters off the line, that's it ! ;)

Consider this revision 1 of my ghetto cooling, I'll go through some adjustments to fit ramsinks lol.

Phew, after all that...

Any clearer? :o

Oh yea. I was thinking why the hell is the card bending upwards :P
@BloodWolf: I think that heatsink is on the Northbridge chip. That mobo must weigh a few kgs by now lol

Lol I always like to see every so often when folks do this but as has been said BE WARNED about using the cable ties. I am assuming that you are going to come up with something substancially more permanent? I know of a few friends that have done this over the years and the cable ties have always managed to stretch slightly over time from constantly going from warm to cool all the time.

Good for testing, baad mmmkay for a full time solution ;).

that could possibly be the future right there my son!

The way you have done seems very well thought out, fair play to ya :D

Ben

Haha, that is a good mod right there. I've stuck a heatsink on an old graphics card with a bit of garden twine before though which is not advised. :) I figure it will never be left on long enough to get so hot to be a fire risk. ;)

nice job :) pity you can't mount it with the gaps in the fins pointing towards the rear of the case, might drop the ambient temp in the case a degree or two. You can always dremmel some of the motherboard out to fit it :D (only joking, put that dremmel down and walk away...)

Regarding the bending:

My card has the same problem and its COMPLETLY stock. I never ever touched the card except when I took it out of the box and pushed it into the slot.

Also as time passed I noticed that the bend board and the accumulated heat of the GPU (90C+- when playing hardcore games) reshaped the PCI connector!

Yes thats right, the plastic connector under high temps changed shaped and is now slightly bend in the same angle as the card.

Finally, I belive the mod bends the card also since it has a bend as stock. However, eventually I am worried for mine (which is stock, and should be covered by warranty????) and the modded one that it will crack the lines (one day!) or permanently damage the PCI connector on the mobo.
