I've just purchased Ghost In The Shell 2.0 (inc. the 'real' original on a 2nd disc) and Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence on Bluray for a very good price from the Rainforest site. Ive seen both of these movies and like them both, but would like to experience the other GITS productions.

In terms of timeline and plot, Im very confused with how all of its to be watched, we have...

Ghost In The Shell
Ghost In The Shell Innocence
Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex
Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
Ghost In The Shell The Laughing Man
Ghost In The Shell The Individual Eleven
Ghost In The Shell Solid State Society

From what I have read, the bottom three are spin off movies from the SAC sets but dont need to be watched if youve already seen the two SAC sets...

I cant seem to fathom what is what!?

Thanks

P.S. I also really like Appleseed, Appleseed Exmachina and Vexille. Are there any other good animes similar? (In terms of good sci-fi or CGI production)

iirc (working from memory here) ghost in the shell 2.0 and innocence are film versions (with slight variations) of the 2 stand alone complex's.....

As to what else to watch like appleseed, ex machina and vexille - I like appleseeds but wasn't as keen on vexille however I would say you would like the below (some not out in uk yet).
final fantasy spirits within
final fantasy advent children (blu ray is slightly longer)
planetz
gundam movie(s)
patlabor movies
break blade
armoured trooper votoms
karas
captain harlock (new movie might not be out yet)

some anime series are pretty good for it too but it really depends if you want to go this way. I'm thinking of things like
eureka seven
gundam 00
zoids
bubblegum crisis (personally prefer tokyo 2040)
star driver (now showing)

My general understanding was that the Ghost in the Shell and GITS Innocence exist in their own little universe outside of all the other stuff.

Pretty much, GITS and Innocence are considered seperate to SAC/2.0, the rest are just a rehash of SAC/2.0..

Oh and Tachikoma ROCK!

actually yeah thats more like it, got them muddled up :o

Thanks guys. So are the spin-off movies just a cut down, highlight movie version of the SAC and SAC2?

Not quite.

Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence are the two original films and are separate from the other items.

The Laughing Man is a film of the over-arcing story from the first SAC series
The Individual Eleven is a film of the over-arcing story from the second SAC series.

The Ghost in the Shell Solid State Society is a film set in the same "universe" as the SAC seres', instead of the original films, but is a separate story to the series.

If you are watching the series then skip the Laughing Man and Individual Eleven as the series are a lot better

The spin off movies, are pretty much just that, remixes of the individual SAC series, a few new scenes are added in, and the soundtrack is changed, but The Laughing Man and Individual Eleven, are SAC/2.0 respectively.

Sorry for going OT but not worth posting a new thread for it but is Advent Children worth picking up on Blu-Ray? Also are these out on Blu-Ray yet too? as my Ghost in the Shell dvd has a bad scratch on it.

Sorry again and thanks in advance.

:)

I had the DVD and sold it, got the Blu Ray. Picture is much better and the actual film is like 20+ minutes longer. Definitely worth it.

GITS films are out on Blu Ray, however from what I've read they have had new CG stuff squeezed in which doesn't flow too well with the original stuff.

The new CG stuff at the beginning of the first film does not fit very well at all ... but after that section is over then the rest of the film works pretty well and looks pretty good on BD.

I might upgrade. Bloody Blu Ray bug making me have to replace everything I had already. Akira should look pretty special on Blu Ray. Want those Evangelion Rebuilds too but they're soooo slow to come out.
