...just been watching CSI, and in the story line revolved around a Las Vegas Casino that was just shut after a murder, when they re-visited it was preserved to the way it was the same day the doors shut.

I know the USA is a much larger than the UK, but why does it have so many Ghost Towns? It seems really strange that people just up-sticks and leave!

I've been looking on this website and theres some really interesting stuff on there.

I suppose the closest thing we have to that is 28 Days Later but it just doesn't seem half as awesome!!

Paranoia, I guess. I think there are loads of empty/abandoned towns in America, perhaps due to its vastness.

Remember quite a few 'ghost' towns were probably quite small, and had very few residents, so they were emptied quickly.

Wasn't something similar to this posted a couple of months ago, about ghost towns around the world. I remember there being some really interesting pictures too.

I think a lot has to do with shifts in culture and trade.

Towns that have been build up around a specific industry also have a tendency to become abandoned when the need for that particular industry or material collapses (e.g. mining towns). Disasters can also cause the creation of ghost towns, such as Prypiat.

Although old mining communities in the UK (especially Wales) have collapsed and the towns declined they still remain fairly close to neighbouring places to keep going to some degree, unlike in places such as America, due to the vastness of the space and separation between communities.
