Ghostbusters Reboot

I don't see what the problem is. I thought Bridesmaids was hilarious. Hilarious in a pretty throw away way, but hilarious nonetheless. I was glad when I saw it was the best two actors from Bridesmaids in this.

Do people think that by releasing a reboot, the old films somehow get erased? They can't do the same thing again, but they can take inspiration from something and attempt to reinvent it. It happens all the time, and it hits as often as it misses.

Also, I have no idea why people think these are unknown actors. They are very much well known, here in the UK, not just across the Atlantic.

Also also, what is with people saying "Oh I hope it's a spoof, they won't be able to do a serious version"... Erm, aren't the original ghostbusters basically spoof films?! They are among the least serious films I have seen! Of course it will have that same" Doesn't take itself serious" vibe.

Never seen Bridesmaids.

This is a political correctness agenda.

Ghostbusters was a supernatural comedy. Spoofs were Hot Shots, Loaded Weapon, Police Squad, Naked Gun and such. There's a huge difference between comedy and mocking.

I have no problem with this, but Film Crit Hulk brings up a good point about what might actually be a fly in the ointment.

Re: Spy

This movie is a lot of fun! Hulk really liked it!

But the film also made clear an ongoing issue of Feig's that really needs to be talked about. So. We all know that Feig has both a remarkable sense for character and empathy, right? Even at his most "jokey" he always knows who the people in his film's are. It's precisely why someone like Rose Byrne is so damn incredible in the film. It's not just her attitude, but her perspective that is funny. And that's what makes Feig great, he shows you how people see things and then derives sublime comedy from how those perspectives clash against others.

But as Feig keeps becoming a deserved powerhouse in the industry, that means it's also time we talk about how Feig's sense of actual cinematic language is so stunningly lacking that it's finally become a problem. Well, not a real problem, as he's doing the most important thing a film could do. But as he keeps diving into genre fare it's sincerely preventing him from making his best possible movies. Because what should feel like blockbuster language with his voice and insight are coming across as weirdly airless '90s television. Letting everything play out in a wide angle is fine for pure dialogue and group dynamics, but there is virtually no cinematic emphasis to combine with the great ideas behind his work (yes, action needs to be shot in wide, but you also have to follow the action of a kinetic movement, or cut between them, otherwise it feels inert. Great action is finding the goldilocks zone of distance and impact). And when the second unit work does shows up, it so rudely interrupts the proceedings and vice versa. Sweeping helicopter shots cut into non-reveals of Jude Law just kind of standing there.

And Hulk would argue this matters because we're talking about cinema. It's not even the cinema of the understated. There's barely even a command of mood. And all Hulk wants to say is that he needs to just commit to the idea and follow through with the same wit and intelligence he reserves for every other aspect of his work. Because in the end...

A film like ghostbusters is so much more than characters operating in plain space, shouting random insults about what another character looks like...

I wouldn't say the original Ghostbusters were spoofs. Sure it was a little tongue in cheek, didn't take themselves too seriously, which was cool. It just feels a little contrived to remake it, but specifically with an all female cast. I suppose I should be more open minded. I'm still going to watch it when it comes out, with high hopes but low expectations!

And as above ^^ I really like Kristen Wiig.

I'm still totally clueless about how a proper sequel was in the works for 25 years plus with no luck, then this literally gets the go ahead and into production after 5 minutes. The proper GB3 never ever made it past script drafts....

Basically for 25 years they kept trying to get the same team together.
Some were interested at different stages to others, some had ideas that they really wanted (which went against what others really wanted) etc etc.

As time went on the original cast were getting older (arguably too old to go back to the same sort of situation that GB was set in), and for ten+ of that 25 years the market wasn't felt to be right for sci-fi film like it.

Personally I'm reserving my opinion on the film until there are at least some proper trailers and/or reviews in.

The pictures don't really say much, certainly not "it's going to be awful", especially when you consider that the new uniforms are basically the old uniforms but updated to keep consistent with what is fairly standard cheap worker/janitorial uniforms.
The original ones were basically janitors uniforms with a logo, the new ones are basically janitorial ones complete with the sort of high vis that is pretty much a requirement in many situations (working in warehouses/around forklifts), and steel toecapped boots.

Not to mention one picture is the movie poster (usually something someone has spent hours choosing exactly the right shot for), and the others are basically "caught on set" or basic promo shots.

This is gona be soooo (poop) i dunno why the heck they are bothering.

Rather a new set of male ghostbusters were in maybe eddie murphy or will smith for the comedy, the guy from ted as the scientist maybe, the dude from mad max. Meh u get the idea some good soild actors.

Heck a red dwarf cast ghostbusters would rock vs this all female cast one. Costumes and car look total crap.

That looks amazing(ly bad).

Of course it's faker than a Nigerian Prince who has money for you but needs a security deposit to release the money and just needs your bank account details to pay the money in)

Nothing to do with sexism, everything to do with this film didnt need a stupid reboot. Cant help but feel that they spent so long trying to get GB3 made and were 'almost?' there with it till Ramis tragically left us, that they just made this in its place :(

Why couldn't it be like Top Gun 2 where it just didn't happen...
