Gibraltar.. whats it like?

I have only visited Gibraltar for 1 day, I was on a job on a marine survey vessel, came over from algeciras with is a friggin DUMP.
However, the weather was lovely and warm and the monkeys were great.
English pubs were a little funny because if you’re after a change of scenery then you may be shocked.

Hi First of all.

Hi S7rider!

I liked it in Gibraltar, I really did, I even said at the end that I wish I were back there now for another couple of years.

Yes I was there a few years ago but unlike certain parts of my anatomy my mind is in reasonable working order.;)

Now those Rock Apes and I don’t mean the RAF Regiment at North Front, didn’t only bite people who unwisely fed them, they also wrenched windshield wipers and wing mirrors from cars and crapped on their bonnets too. Sounds like something you’d read in the Liverpool echo NOT The Gibraltar Chronicle.

Cats’ Pee. Now you’ve already owned up to being a university man, and from my experience university people can’t get out of bed early in the morning, so I’ll excuse you. Each weekday morning at about 6.30am Me and my friend ran Europa Point, Camp bay up past the Naval Hospital, Gymnasium, Mediterranean Steps (or Princess Caroline’s Battery) and the only thing I remember between all those puff, pants, gasps and wheezing was smelling my friends stale beer from the Angry Friar and the smell of Cats’ Pee. I think the cats pee on the roads; a bit like a drunken matelo!

My wife’s just hit me on the back of the head, saying that we really enjoyed our two years there. She was in a ladies squash team and states that the Gibraltarian Ladies Squash Teams did NOT cheat, she had friends in those teams (The beautiful Melisa Perez?). I'm NOT too sure about some of the others masquerading as ladies especially with their stout hairy legs muscular shoulders, they should have played in the Gibraltarian Mens Teams ;)

But No I never deserved a sand blasting.

Keep smiling

I went there last November for a wedding, we stayed for a week.

All the people who have mentioned it being a stop-off destination, or a 2-day thing are absolutely correct. In the first two days I had done everything interesting, including seeing the Apes (this wasn't cheap) and the WWII tunnels.

The traffic is mental, people are friendly, booze is VERY cheap (70cl Jack Daniels for about £8, let's just say my suitcase was stuffed), airport runway goes through the main road across town so big delays sometimes, food is just the same as UK and same price if I recall.

I wouldn't go back but I did like it. Walking down the high street you could be in any UK town, but you've got a nice climate and unusual scenery to go with it.

I stayed at The Rock hotel and would recommend it to anyone, especially a Balcony room... the view was spectacular! Although be warned, this hotel is build into the Rock (hence the name) and the apes did come down to my Balcony regularly scrounging for food. Keep everything locked up safe :)

I've been many times. It's worth going for a day trip, but I really wouldn't want to live there. I know a couple of people who have lived and worked there, they didn't last long.

It's a very small place, and there's not a lot to do really. It's a really grim place when the sun isn't shining IMO.

Booze and fags are cheap, anything else looked expensive to me - especially food in the supermarket. Property prices look worse than London from a brief look in a few agents windows.

Been about 6 times but only for a couple of days each time while going on deployment or on the way back from deployment, always had a cracking time. :)

Don't worry about the smell of cat pee that is S7riders dog Emily. Silly bitch is hooked on cider like a crack addict and roams the streets at 1am peeing all over the place?

Property costs through the roof, the actual island is full of old people who are retired. Most of the workers actually live in Spain and travel across the border every morning and night.

Island full of old people who are retired? You sir need to do a bit of research before posting the first thing that comes to your head.

Hate the monkeys.

Place is like stepping into a tardis or something, wierd seeing london police helmets and UK soldiers standing outside civic buildings , post boxes etc on a tiny island on the med with monkeys and tropical trees etc. RBS, Marks and Sparks etc. Little irish section blah blah

Cool little museum though, and you get to watch the boats that are in. Climb the rock and look at the battlements, but thats as enthralling as it gets. Hmm, they have special gardens and city walls too come to think of it.

It gets boring quickly though, and there is a cinema too but everytime we went it was always just me and the girlfriend, maybe one other person lol.

Everything just felt wierd to me, I preffer Spain.

Stumbled on this thread.

Awesome place to live in at the moment. Whilst the rest of the world is worrying about a recession, this place just keeps gaining more and more momentum (and new buildings).

Email me in trust if you're serious (...) about relocating. It's not quite as simple as moving from one UK city to another, and there are pro's and con's as anything in life.

The tax on any salary is pretty much the same as the UK the last I checked (might have changed now). Price of goods on the island not much different to the UK and most restaurants etc have over inflated prices due to the number of tourists.

I have no idea why anyone would want to live there.

Did read this up or did you make it along the way?
Have a read its got the basic stuff

In a nutshell it's what I was thinking Muzzy.

The mentality/lifestyle of people here (as you well know) is quite different from someone in the UK. Not better or worse, just different, which is the main thing to consider if someone is serious about relocating here.

Only stopped over for a day on a cruise this summer.

I work in Southampton, and it reminded me of a hot Southampton, very industrial port, one main street of shops and lots of pubs.

I also found it very dirty and smelly (I agree with the cat pee comment)
