Gift for new parents

One of my best mates and his girlfriend have just had a wee baby boy and I'd like to get them something to congratulate them. I have seen a load of these "New Baby gift boxes" but they seem to be pretty expensive for what is contained within them.

Can anyone suggest something a bit different? I don't want to get them something that someone else will already have gotten but I also don't want to get something that is of no use to them if you know what I mean.

Budget is up to about 50 quid if that will cover it.

I'm liking the idea of the baby album. It's functional yet sentimental. The only problem is that someone may already have covered that base. I'll have to investigate. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Make something yourself, far more interesting and personal.

They'll have a ridiculous amount of toys/clothes from newborn, so maybe buy some footwear/clothing for 6-12 months, or a few little bits newborn, rest older.

I'd recommend getting them a baby's sleeping bag - in France they're very common, and are called a Gigoteuse in French.

Here's what I'm on about...

They're extremely good for keeping the sprog nice and warm, without stopping them from wriggling about. They're also considered beneficial in preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrom (SIDS). See here for some info.

You can get them in the UK, but the ones you get on the continent are much more stylish, so it might be worth getting one imported - although you'll get stung on the Euro / £ conversion at the moment.

I got clothes for a friends baby recently, and after deliberately buying 3-6 months she told me that they hardly got any gifts for newborns. If you really don't know, a voucher for somewhere like M&S or Mothercare is probably the most practical thing to get.
