Is it true that you can't just gift someone money without tax implications?

E.g a mother gives her daughter £10,000 via bank transfer.

From what I have read you are only allowed to "gift" £3000 in one tax year.

Let's say the daughter has a £10,000 credit card debt, and her mother post it off, is that allowed?

No, I have received gifts of 10k and 25k. As others say, if the people gifting the money die within 7 years then some tax has to be paid. I was never told how much
I went through all the official channels a few months ago receiving these gifts (for a house deposit)
Gifters passport photo id was required along with a letter saying the gift is required for xyz. Also 3 months of bank account statements from people gifting the money from where the money came from - for money laundering purposes

3 months of my bank statements were required so if it is towards a house, make sure you get gifted deposits 3 months prior. Would make it so much easier just showing 3 month of statements that the money is all yours in one account :)
