Well seeing as I currently still have highly limited access to the internet and so can't ask a few specific people like I wanted to...

What is the best way to get into this?

I've noticed a few jobs going around here but obviously most are expecting me to have some kind of experiance doing it, which currently I don't.

Now I am assuming that me just wandering into a venue and starting snapping would be very much frowned upon, but I really don't know how to go about being allowed to do it but without mountains of pressure to begin with to be producing decent shots.

I'm planning on applying to do this for the student union next year as they have several gigs a week that currently are being shot by sound/lighting techs with an F10/S5500, but obviously this won't be an option until October.

So yeah, any help on how to get started would be fantastic, guys. Cheers.

:o Theres jobs listed for that near you? Lucky :) Are they actual music photography jobs or just hanging out in bars snapping the events? I've seen a few jobs like that round here where you just take pictures of drunk people and some badly flashed gig shots. I was lucky in that I knew a guy in a band who invited me along and I've slowly been building on that with other people. It is easier if you have something to show them. Try and contact bands on MySpace. Offer to do free photography for them so you can get a portfolio. Then talk to the people who organise the events and just build on it.

The specific job was a part time kinda thing for a company called sound control, I found out about it because they contacted my housemate who is a music reviewer, and she mentioned they were looking for reviewers and photographers.

The MySpace idea sounds like it could work, I'll see if I can contact a few old school mates bands aswell... :)

I am quite interested in this, I have been doing photography for a few bands for a while, but just still getting my feet with it.

What kind of equipment would you guys recommend?

I have a 50MM f/1.8 on the way, anything else?

Rich

i use my 50mm f/1.8.

i also get in touch with bands on Myspace to see if they mind me coming along. word of advice, don't waste your time taking along a DSLR to any gig at Carling Academies unless you're on the guestlist and have a photopass because they won't let you in. no exceptions.

when you're shooting local bands, it's easier if the venue has a stage that you can get in front of...the most annoying thing i've found at smaller venues is the 50mm doesnt allow you to get enough in the frame...i'd love something similar around 25-30mm but i don't know what's about/haven't got the money anyway!

I need to get a Photopass for an up and coming gig at the academy 3 in manchester as my mates band is playing there, thanks for reminding me.

no worries. i was supposed to be photographing the Cooper Temple Clause in June, showed up and they'd forgotten to (or someone at the academy had forgotten to) get me a pass...nice wasted journey! :(

Argh that sucks, although I am not definate that I will need a photopass, as I walked in with the band into the academy 3 and they slapped a "Backstage / Band Pass" on me last time.

*Shrugs*

I use my Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6, Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and Canon 50mm f/1.8. I would love that 85mm f/1.2 and a 30D.
