Gig tickets... what's the trick?

OK so I found out the other day that tickets for the first Smashing Pumpkins gig were to go on sale today at 09:30.

So of course, I was there at the computer at 09:25 with a browser tab open for each of the online ticket places, with a search for 'Smashing Pumpkins' in each, refreshing constantly, the theory being as soon as the time came up I would stand at least a chance of buying in one or more of the tabs.

Needless to say, this never happened. The only one where I ever got to see tickets ostensibly come on sale was Ticketmaster, where I selected 2 and clicked 'next' but it then said no tickets were available.

A quick look on ebay confirms that a good portion of the tickets (it's a small venue, the Shepherds Bush Empire) are already on there, and have been for days.

Either the sellers already have the tickets, or they could be pretty sure of getting them. And that's just the ones that ended up on ebay.

So please tell me - what's the trick to getting tickets for hightly demanded events? Is it just a case of getting a job at a ticket vendor?

A job at a ticket vendor does help I guess (I work for See Tickets), but yeah I know how hard it can be getting on our site on the big sale days. I'm not sure theres any secret to it other than being a little lucky, though sometimes you may have better ringing in than on the site.

Dagnamit, I need a ticket to that!

Also missed tickets to Megadeth, and they're now twice the price in Egay..

Used to be a site that offered you the chance to buy tickets before they went on sale.

In fact did it when I went to see Guns N' Roses in 2002 :)

Instead of having all the new gig's go on sale at once at the same time/day why don't they put them up for sale on different days, or different times throughout the day? Which would in theory make telephone/Internet booking work without websites crashing and lines becoming full.

it's probably either the corporate (if such a thing exists for gigs) or the preferential tickets that are on ebay. we tried to get tickets for the rolling stones a while ago at a big venue, and it was decide that american express cc holders were given preferential tickets, they were able to buy up to 12!!!! needless to say, they never reached general sale and went for extortionate prices on ebay.

this is one of my biggest annoyances, it happens for all sporting events, concerts, gatherings whatever has tickets sold for it. ebay need to sort it out.

They need to have a system like Glastonbury this year where the photo is printed on each ticket, that will stop touting for sure but I'm not sure how much that will cost to implement and it will most certainly make touting tickets difficult.

Also remember that making the reselling of tickets difficult will make it that much harder to get rid of an extra ticket if someone drops out or if someone wants to join last minute.

wow. Do you get lots of requests from friends to get tickets for various gigs?

Firefox + auto refresh plugin works for me

Sometime I also go to my uni to buy tickets as they have a higher Tier internet connection, seems to have better reliability.
