Don't think there are any workarounds, its a hardware fault and it affects both modem and non-modem mode.

There was rumour of a firmware being released but I don't think its out in the wild.

It’s circa 12 months since the issue was first raised and coming up on 12 months since it was officially admitted to, I can’t recall any other similar issue of such widespread impact that has been outstanding for so long from VM. My personal feeling is that it’s not going to see a software fix now, if it were fixable it would have been fixed by now.

That's what I'm thinking. I understand its due to the CPU taking on too many tasks and not managing its resource efficiently. Im thinking running the SH3 in modem mode should at least reduce the load on the CPU and therefore the performance?
