Gigabit LAN?

Those kinds of problems 9/10 times are badly coded 64bit drivers.

As for vista I was referring to the documented cases of slow file transfers using shares that run much faster over FTP. I doubt greatly that it's a hardware issue as in order for a NIC to be "gigabit" it needs to comply with various hardware standards which pretty much ensures you'll get more than he's getting. The only bit not governed by the ethernet standard is the drivers and OS compatability.

I love my Gigabit LAN :)

Later on today i will be testing a big transfer between my PC and My laptops 1Gbps port. First try will be from vista to xp, second will be from vista to ubuntu as my laptop has duel boot. That should hopefully let me see if the problem has anything to do with OS or not.

Kylew - i looked at what model is supplied by Sky and its DG834Gv3 - checking on the spec of that model it only supports 10/100mbs gather than 100/1000 mbs.

I can find an altnernative Gigb Switch but i want to reduce as much clutter on my desk as possible.

Are we talking about the correct Sky Router?

The ones on ebay, well ones that I've seen have been the DG834GTs, sky may have updated their newest ones.

Also, the router doesn't have GB networking, I might not have made it very clear, but I was talking about having a separate router and network switch. I've got a DG834GT and a Netgear 5 port GB switch on my desktop. I actually prefer having a separate switch for the computers and a router for the internet because I can turn one of them off without losing the other.

Like I can turn my router off or restart it without affecting any media I might be streaming over my network to other computers in the house, or turn the GB switch off without affecting anything using wifi. :)

Ahhh get ya. I was going for that option when i thought i didn't wanna slash out £80+ for a decent GB cable router.

I will invest in a GB switch so i can transfer my data to and from for my NAS Drive.

I was passing a local computer shop today so I popped in and all they had was TP-Link Gigabit switch, only £20 so I got it.

Just tried it and now transfer speeds are 20mb, not as good as I had hoped but still twice as fast. I'll read through the posts here to see if anyone has suggested anything.

I dont know how you guys are getting 90+ MB / sec. My PC connected directly with a cat5e cable only does 30 MB/sec.

Fast hard drives and RAID arrays. My Array shofts 130MB/s sustained which almost saturates my LAN backbone :D But not enough to buy a managed switch and make load balancing trunks. Though if I were to start HD streaming once my home server is built then steps may need to be taken.
