bought a netgear gs605 5port gigabit switch

also bought 2 gigabit network cards

i have 3 pcs - 2 with the new gigabit cards in them and 1 pc with gb lan onboard

i have the 3 pcs wired into the 5port switch and then a patch cable btn the switch and my dg834g adsl router

i am a little disappointed with the transfer speeds between the (hopefully) gigabit connected pcs - are there any simple apps i can use to check the throughput?

i have set the transfer speeds on the pc cards to 1000 full duplex rather than autonegotiation

the 100/1000 light on the back of the pci card seems to be flickering appropriately

any ideas appreciated on checking everything is working at the correct speed!

i think it sents the data via the router if im right in saying rather than
its not doing this - pc1 -> switch -> pc2
instead this - pc1 -> switch -> router -> switch -> pc2
so its going from 1000 -> 100 -> 1000
i think thats why, try disconnecting the router setting static ip's for each computer and then transfer something.

If the 3 PCs are connected directly to the gigabit switch, then the only traffic going to the router should be internet traffic.

Ignore what I said before - clearly I've not had enough coffee today.

Ok, so 9262637 kilobits were received in 19.7 seconds.

9262637/19.7 = 470184 kilobits/second

470184 kb/s = 459Mbit/sec (divide by 1024 to convert Kb/s to Mbit/s)

Not a bad result. Gigabit is supposed to be up to 1000Mbit/s but you'll never get near that. Assuming you're using IDE or SATA hard disc, I'd be quite pleased with that figure.
