Hi.

We have a home network with several appliances connected to it (desktop, laptop, nas, ps3)
Right now all the devices are connected to a 10/100 adsl router and all need access to internet. What do I for gigabit network, just a gigabit switch or gigabit router?

Thx

Gigabit switch. One cable from the new switch into the router. Everything else attach to the new switch.

Unless you're running a WAN connection with >100mbps.

Thx! However if two 2 devices want to access the internet at the same time, will this setup work? How can the switch arrange the devices' access to internet?

dont think about it... it will work as ots3go says interdevice comms will always be GB any device talking to the internet will be limited to 100MB..

I have the Netgear GS605 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch.

With the same setup as described, and multiple computers/devices can access the internet at the same time.

Thx again! Should I also upgrade the cables to cat6? And if one device (eg laptop) is not gigabit then the whole network will revert back to 100mpbs?

A switch offers dedicated bandwidth to each device.

So the only connection speed change connecting a 100mb device will have is between the device and its own switchport.

The router will handle all that (Using NAT if you really want to know). The switch will basically point information in the right direction :)

Thank you all, I got the Netgear GS605 and its working beautifully.
One more question, is it worth to install gigabit powerline adapters?
