hi all just wandering if anyone knows how long the warranty on a gigabyte 4870 lasts, and where i stand as i bought one approx 9 months ago maybe close to a year but have lost the warranty, and now i am having problems with it seriously overheating and crashing my system, i ran furmark today and the temp jumped from 53 to 69 instantly then system crashed before any more temp change could be registered, i have checked out the fan speed in ccc and when i change the speed up to 100% there is no audible change in fan speed and no change in idle temps at all, so it seems to be stuck on 20% fan speed therefore not cooling enough under stress any help would be appreciated.

just wandering if its possible for some kind sole at overclockers to retrieve a receipt for the above item from the original box for the item which still has the overclockers barcode on the side, (fingers crossed ) any help would be appreciated.

You dont need the original printed receipt. If you bought it from OCUK, just log into your account and look through your order history, or if you still have the order confirmation email that can work as well.

Is your card the reference cooled one or the one with the Zalman cooler?

Gigabyte warranty is 3 years, they charge £10 for handling costs and reccomend sending it back to the retailer if its still in the first year (I had a failed one of these too and were Emailing them lots about the temperatures when using them in crossfire).

The Zalman cooler they use is way out of its league on the 4870.

Yea, that one doesnt support fan speed change, it is a 2 pin fixed speed low RPM fan, though it should actually be fine for a single card setup.

You should try post in the customer services section and ask for a copy of your reciept.

Also dont use Furmark on these cards, thats probably whats ruining them, although this isnt your fault and they should be capable of running it without failing at stock settings, but they cant. Furmark has killed lots of 4870s.

no its sli setup temps go mad on it, only downloaded furmark today ran it twice, been having lots of system crashes in games like left 4 dead 2, and modern warfare2

That will explain it then, two of these in crossfire = top card fails after using it for a some time. Just try get a copy of your receipt from customer services.

so basically its a design flaw with the card, not having fan speed control, there is nothing actually wrong with the card then, its just not very well made, and also it states very clearly on the back of the box ati crossfirex multi gpu technology, so they also lie on the box, oh well not sure where i stand with this now, will have to contact customer services, thanks again guys.

Thank you for your enquirey.

We will do everything we can to track down your order for you. Please phone our friendly sales team on 0871 200 5052 with the barcode details from the packaging and we will try to track this down for you. Or as has been suggested, if it was purchased online, details should still be in your order history.

Best Regards

The card itself is very well made and is high quality, but the cooler they used on it cant have been tested on a crossfire setup on a board without additional cooling fans. It does support crossfire so thats not a lie, but the amount of heat they produce in crossfire is too much for the Zalman cooler, I remember touching mine after stressing and it was probably hot enough to cause burns.

Since then I learnt to read up about power usage and temperatures of video cards as well as FPS benchmarks before buying them.

ok well spoke to overclockers customer support, and ive decided to get a better cooler for this and give that a go first, have been reccomended the zalman cooler that plugs into a 3 pin socket on my mother board, anyone had any experience with these at all, http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-042-ZA&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787
the reason i ask is its already got a zalman cooler on thats not up to the job, any thoughts wold be appreciated.

That one is the quad heatpipe version of the cooler already on it so it should be significantly better, and the fan speed can be increased as well.
