Gigabyte 7870 WF problems

Yeah, i asked him to try the latest betas. He's on 13.4 just now. I can imagine how annoying the flickering would be. If the new drivers don't cure it, i guess he will have to RMA again and try explain the fault to the retailer (if they listen this time)

Tried that and using Chrome Matt, still the same. Think he hates me for getting him into pc's haha.

Could well be a fault with the gpu then Heisenberg. I had to send one of my 7950 Ice-Q's back for a similar flickering fault. Turns out it was the DVI connection which was dodgy. You could always try using a different connection, hdmi for example, see if it still occurs.

Yeah, i tried that when i had it in my system. He uses hdmi and i used dvi. Wish he had bought it from here so it would be 10x easier to explain to ocuk customer service. Lesson learned for him :) Do you think he should RMA it to the retailer again, or take the hit on p&p and go straight to Gigabyte? Luckily I've not had to go through RMA process before.

DSR if you can, if not go via the retailer. Might be worth taking a video of the flickering and showing them.

I think that's the problem when you deal with 'box shifters'.

If the card is outwith the DSR period it might be worth biting the bullet and dealing with Gigabyte directly. Whilst I've not had to deal with them they do seem to be regarded to be one of the best for warranty support and being UK based have a quick turnaround. Whilst your friend may get lucky with ****** (providing links to vids & as much info as poss may help some) if they decide 'no fault' again he'd be out of pocket for postage and still stuck with a card that isn't fit for purpose.

Out of interest how long ago did he buy the card? I looked at the retailer's website and they are quoting a card ref of GV-R787OC-2GD* for the WF7870 and there is a revised bios on GB's website for that model: http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4154&dl=1#bios

Of course if it's the GV-R787WF3-2GD version then you're out of luck :(

(*only mentioning this as GB's search function can be a bit funky)

He bought it in June so is obviously way out of DSR period. Never noticed it straight away as it was only used as a gaming PC and the card seems fine when under load in more demanding games. It was only noticed when he got a monitor (had been playing on his tv) and started browsing etc that it was noticed. Then obviously when he bought HL2 it was very noticeable.

It's the WF3 version so no later BIOS available. I double checked on Gigabytes website. When he RMA'd it the first time it seemed to be an automated process and he never really got to explain the fault to someone. Wrote it in the RMA request what the fault was but it was clearly ignored. That's why i suggested going direct to GB. I would imagine they would be more helpful than the retailer.

I thought that was probably the case, was clutching at straws really.

Just a shame that your workmate is having these problems rather than being able to get on with enjoying his new pc. Whilst he might not feel that way at the moment I'm sure when he gets a working card he'll thank you for introducing him to pc gaming.

Completely agree with you about going the Gigabyte route as I'm sure he stands more chance of getting the issue resolved within a decent timeframe.

Either way I hope things work out for him :)
