I want to use a 250Gb Maxtor Diamondmax SATA II 7200rpm hard drive as a back up with a Gigabyte eSATA bracket.
Is it safe to use a bare drive without a caddy?
I will only use it about once a month.

This is fine, I've got the same setup. Just make sure the drive doesn't get knocked or trodden on whilst it's spinning, and try to keep it either horizontal or vertical.

I have used this facility on a Gigabyte GA P35 DS3P a number of time, all I did was put the HDD on an antistatic bag on top of the desk, and used the supplied (by Gigabyte) eSATA and molex to Sata cables to power it etc.

I found it best to connect the cables to the HDD while the computer was powered off, then power on, it all works well. :)
