Gigabyte GA 965P-DS3P

With all this talk of DS3 NB's getting hot, are they actually failing because of it? Or are they not designed to happily run hot?

You know I've never heard of a single problem because of it, certainly not a problem for me.

The Northbridge heatsinks aren't the issue - the real problems lie in people's perceptions that computers should run 'hand-hot'.

The current boards aren't as hot as the last batch of pre-Core2Duo Intel boards. The PWM on my Abit LG-81 would regularly run at over 120C and the outside of the case panel could be too hot to touch after an Orthos session. Never failed for me or Mister Mister, who bought it from me.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was an occasional occurrence

It is an occasional occurrence. Pretty much every occasion Gibbo posts ;) But, as they're OcUK's forums I have to accept that and look at the offer being made and decide if it looks like a winner for me.

Hi again guys. It was Orthos stable for 6 hours at 3.2ghz which i am really pleased about. Here's a screenie to show you:-

I am now at 3.4ghz and running Orthos again. The first hour is complete and all is well. Had to up the Vcore from 1.4v to 1.475v though. It's still only hitting 31 degrees on both cores while running Orthos though. This is where sticking my radiator on a windowsill with the window open is paying off. It's bloody freezing up here and forecast to get even colder. :D

Settings are:-
378x9=3.402ghz
Vcore 1.475v
Vdimm 2.1v
FSB overvoltage +0.20
MCH overvoltage +0.20 I presume one of these is the NB voltage. If so what's the other one do?

Is there anyway to set the memory to run at 1T on this board. If so i can't find it anywhere, not even in the advaced bios (Ctrl+F1). NB is a little warm but nothing to worry about to my mind. I can't see why some people (not mentioning names) kick up such a fuss. I am really happy with this board now. An extra 1.6ghz out of a 4300!! You cannot complain about that. :D :D :D

Sadly no, all the Intel chipset boards run 2T only. The NVidia boards have the option to run 1T, but most RAM won't do it at overclocking speeds anyway. Even the supposedly 'hand-picked' Crucial Anniversaries are generally only good to 400MHz at 1T.

No 1T. Bugger. Think i read that it does'nt matter as much on Intel rigs though.

Still looking good at 3 hours of Orthos. :D 3.4 will be my lot though until i water cool the NB. Just checked it and you can fry an egg on it. Does'nt seem to be harming performance though.

On my last post i asked which voltage was the NB of the bottom two. Does anybody know at all? It would seem that these clock very similar to the DS3 as for 3.2ghz i used Monstermunch's settings in the DS3 thread. Think i might ask in there.

Had it Orthos stable for over 8 hours at 3.4ghz. Temps were still in the low 30's. Not trying for anymore though as the NB was very hot when i tried 3.6ghz (100% overclock  ). Booted into windows easily but i did'nt want to run Orthos due to the high NB temps. I will wait until i watercool the NB to push it futher. I am very happy with 3.4 anyway. Just need to play with the multiplier now to get the most out of the ram. I will also try to tweak the voltages down too. I am not going to run full benchies as it would be quite pathetic with only one of my 7800gt's. I will wait until i get my 8800.

Here's a screenie of it at 3.4ghz just passing 7 hours of Orthos.

Gotta say your cpu temps are amazing if true. So full load your cpu is mid 30's? What cooling are you using?

I believe he said he was using watercooling and putting the radiator on the windowsill in freezing temperatures to get those low temps ;)

Yep, on water. Aquaextreme 50z pump, Aquaextreme MP-05 Pro LE cpu block and MP-1 GPU block. Alphacool NexXxoS Xtreme III triple Radiator is mounted on a windowsill with the window slightly open. Outside temp is at 4 degrees C at the moment. Three 120mm Thermaltake Thunderblades sit on a shroud on top of the rad. The rad is mounted in the top of a rad box that i built. On the window side of the box the side is cut out and has filter material sandwiched between two pieces of mesh so that no dust, beasties etc can be sucked in. Works a treat too. I also have a XSPC 250mm Passive reservoir which drops the temps a little bit more as well.
