Gigabyte R9 280x Rev.2 Flickering in 2D applications, Random clock boosts

i cant believe no one mentioned MSI AB profiles, make MSI AB profiles for 2d and 3d profiles, this way you can force clocks and volts depending on the situation. Thus no flickering.

Just to add a little input, I've not had any troubles with the exact card.

I've been running it at stock settings with the drivers which came on the disc. (Can't remember which version that was now). I've updated to the 14.1 beta this morning and still no issues.

Perhaps you have a fault with the card?

Its usually a case of PICNIC sadly.

OP did you try making 2d and 3d profiles in MSI AB?

How to set up MSI AB profiles:

1. Download MSI AB (Latest version). Make sure you include rivatunerstatisticsserver when you install it.
2. Before you do anything go in to settings and set unoficcial overclocking mode to "without powerplay", Restart MSI AB.
3. Enable "reset display mode on applying unofficial oc" , Restart MSI AB.
4. Now that you're back in MSI AB click the reset button, save this profile to 1.
5. Now make another profile, be it oced or not it doesnt matter. Save this to profile 5.
6. Go in to settings and go all the way to the right where it says "profiles".
7. On 2d profiles you use your profile 1. On 3d you use 5.

This will cause your GPU to reset itself and go back to stock thus letting it throttle whenever you're in 2d, it will engage 3d clock whenever you start a game or a benchmark or something.

There are some rogue applications that will trigger the 3d profile, the only one i know of this far is GPUz.

To keep MSI AB from engaging 3d clocks because of rogue apps like GPUz go to RivaTuner Statistics Server. On the left side you can see a bunch of pre listed programs. GPUz isnt there, to make MSI AB ignore GPUz and keep it from engaging 3d profile you must add GPUz here and put application detection level to None. Use the big + icon in the bottom left corner and browse to GPUz and add it, and then put application detection level to None on GPUz.

You can do this to all .exes as far as i know.

This should fix flickering/stuttering, because you're no longer letting your card decide :D. Its caused by your card being indecisive :D.

try 13.11 they were fine for me.
the new 14.1 driver has made my screen flicker twice, I'm not sure if it was the whole computer screen or just firefox though. (firefox not hardware accelerated)

it's been fine since I woke up though so might have just been a disturbance of the force

13.10 which were included with my MSI 280X OC Gaming has sorted mine. 13.12 caused flickering.

oh I'm not even using hdmi.

don't think hdmi is good for 1080p @ 120/144hz ?

I'm on duallink dvi I think

I was posting in relation to my post further up :p

Sorry no idea about 120/144hz 46" LED TV as my PC monitor here :D

I have looked in afterburner and it says my fan speed at idle is 267374930rpm. *Sad sigh*

It stays around 3140rpm during benchmarks

Did anyone find a definite fix to this? I'm trying to do CAD right now on my 280X and it's flickering like mad and driving me insane.

No BIOS or driver update, on a MSI 280x Gaming OC.

Sorry for the thread revival but I'm so bleeping happy right now I had to say thanks.

My R9 280X was suffering from the screen flicker problem on desktop and web pages under the 14.4 drivers but a simple downgrade to 13.1 has entirely fixed the problem.

Been running for 5 days now with no problems atall in games or 2D application, before I was getting a regular flicker maybe 7 or 8 times a day.

Was really worried my card was about to die but now all seems fine, so a big thanks from me.
