Overclockers have rejected my RMA for a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard, saying that there are bent pins which are causing the motherboard to only read 4gb of the 6gb installed. Only 2 of the ram bays are working.

This is a common problem amongst these motherboards as a quick ocuk forum and google search will confirm.

Ocuk have kindly offered to send the board back to Gigabyte in order for them to fix the problem. What is the usual turn around on this sort of thing? Anyone had experience with Gigabyte.

I dont know the answer, but im having the same problem with the same motherboard, only 4gb of 6gb working. I got then all working last night by putting them in the slots in a different order but today the problem came back. Im waiting for the rma to send the ram back.

It can be to do with seating of the cpu! This I have no doubt about. The pins are bent and this is causing the ram slots to not work. I thought this is weird at first but I have been reassured that this is what is causing the ram slots to malfunction.

They didn't really give a time. I'm more curious about Gigabytes after sales support in general.

First of all it was slot 5 not working now its slot 1. And I reversed the order of the ram so the stick that wasnt working in slot 5 is now not working in slot 1.

There's a general pattern emerging here with these mobos, one that suggests gigabyte are sending out dodgy boards. The Internet is full of people reporting this problem and I refuse to accept that it is user error on my part! I didn't place or remove the CPU any differently to how I usually would. The system posted straight away but the ram slots never worked as they should! Gigabyte are either sending out defective boards with bent pins or they are not fit for purpose, in that the pins are becoming bent too easily when the CPU is being clamped down!

Shouldn't OCUK offer a refund and they claim back there money from Gigabyte as this sounds like a manufactur defect.

yeah there are lots of people having the same trouble, do you think mine is a bent pin issue? I think mines a ram issue because whatever slot i put a particular stick in stops working.

In that case I apologise alexhull24.

No sweat!

Yes, you're not the first to experience the issue. It can be difficult to get the retailer to side with you if there's physical damage to pins on a board. I have a feeling that the onus is on you to prove it arrived in that condition, otherwise its your word against theirs. In this case, since it's more of a known issue, I'd hope the retailer could replace it in good faith and take up the issue with gigabyte themselves. Sounds like you need to get things straight with them first, but don't be surprised if OcUK take money from your account for a testing fee or similar. In fact, I'd check.

Well I rang ocuk straight away after receiving the rejection email and expressed my disapproval for their findings. I explained that I had installed the CPU correctly and that I couldn't see how it was a user error. I explained to them that this is a common error with these boards and that they had a mind to contact gigabyte as this issue would inevitably lose them customers! Me being one of them! He said there was nothing they could do and placed the phone on the hook. 5 minutes later the tech support guy rings back saying he's just got off the phone to a gigabyte representative and that ocuk would send the board to them to be fixed! I agreed but have since checked my email to discover the item has now been replaced??? It's on it's way to me apparently! I'm very pleased and they have secured a very valued customer :)

Great news! Sounds like they realised and have decided to replace your board straight away.

I had a similar experience with a PSU that 'worked' but had an inherent fault. Had a new one on my door the next day.

Nice one OcUK.

your lucky i had a very similar issue with a foxconn board which has been sent back,i thought as its only 4 months old ocuk would replace no such luck.

Im still awaiting the repair.replacement after 9 days but i think Foxconn RMA service is in The Netherlands so im not sure when i will get board back.

Try each stick of ram in one of the working ram slots. Only put 2gb in at a time. If the computer boots and loads windows you know it's not the ram.

This is the weird thing, yesterday I tried every stick in every slot and they all worked fine, and it started showing as 6gb working again. Today it was back to just 4gb usable. Just now i took out the 2 sticks that were working, leaving the one that wasnt working where it is, and it started working again. It seems if i take them out and put them back in again they start working again, but not for long.
