Gigabyte UD3r memory trouble

Strange I didn't notice before but all of a sudden I have noticed that if I up the speed of my memory chips to 1600 (Which they support) . The bios only displays 4gb Instead of the 6gb that is installed... If I lower the memory speed to 1066... all 6gb is detected..

I have read various threads about this but I can't see much sense from them.
some ppl say the processor pins may be bent.. but the I7 doesn't have pins does it?

Anyway if the processor was faulty then surely the PC would crash all of the time (which it doesn't)

The system is very stable, that's why I can't understand why its not picking up the memory when the frequency is enabled to 1600 by using the MIT profile 1 on the gigabyte bios.

The strange thing is that I was sure it has been working before..

I don't think its a fault with the memory either, as when the frequency is at 1066 all 6gb are detected and I don't get any instability.. windows sees the 6gb..

Just a bit annoyed that I can't seem to figure out what I need to do to get all 3 triple channel sticks to run at 1600..

Just for the bings and googlers

Anyone who suggests that your processor is faulty please try this first:

take all memory modules out

Blow out the slots (I used compressed air)

Re seat the memory and make sure they are completely secure in the slots (Check the latches each side)

Job done..

Works now..

Just reseating the chips may not fix it permanantly, it may however have made the board re-adjust the voltages and these may drop back to default settings as mine apparently did.

Try upping the QPI/VTT voltage a little and see if it helps.

This is the voltage for the memory controller system and as i understand it, needs a little more juice to run at these speeds.

I had a problem with blue screens and resets under stress tests and also the missing 2gb issue. Upping the QPI/VTT voltage fixed these issues for me. Do it in small increments and see what happens.

I have the same issues all the time.. swaping the modules around sometimes works but i generally swap the modules as i keep substantial stocks. Weird thing is that i can use them in another board and they seem to work fine.. Weird... does it with 6gb or 12gb...

Also try updating the bios it sometimes helps...

Yeah my first idea was to update the BIOS but it's already got the latest version according to the gigabyte update tool.. F1

It seems that this problem is quite common but so many people have so many different stories about it, some saying that the MB is broken, RMA everything but to be honest I don't believe anything is broken... normally these things have a simple solution.

I dunno either.. its not just the UD3R either.. I have just built a UD7 and it does the same.. as does the UD5.. I now get a message saying Recovering Lost Memory... WTF???

Ok I have upped the QPI/VTT slightly to see if it is more stable at running at the 1600mhz speed.

Will let you know the results

My motherboard was faulty.

The guy at the shop tested with different ram and a different cpu.

The middle white memory slot was deffinately faulty... and often the board would hang in the BIOS.

I got a new board ( same ) and changed the memory for kingston and so far its all doing fine.

As a side note the kingston XMP profile seems to be a lot more accurate than the patriot was, setting the voltages correctly etc.

The guy said he had been having quite a lot of problems with the patriot stuff lately... maybe a bad batch somewhere?

Ok its stopped working after 1 wk

I have slightly increased the voltage again

see what happens now..

hopefully I won't cook the ram

Theres been a lot of problems with the memory slots on these gigabyte boards my old ud5 had to be replaced becuse of it also i reads lots of posts in the past and present where people had memory troubles for one reason or another. Going asus for my next board.

Mine has been fine (touch wood), it must have been a bad day in the Taiwan labour factory when your boards were being made. :p

Well the QTT voltage increases dont seem to do much. It last for a week and then goes back to 1066.

It's not a big deal though, just have to go into bios and save and exit and its back to 1600 again.

very strange.

I've updated to the Beta Bios.. Seems quite different and the speakers make some strange noises during post but its working so I'll see if it lasts longer than a week this time.
