Gilad Shalit to be exchanged for 1026 prisoners

"Israel's Channel 2 reports that Shalit will be released across the border from Gaza into Egypt and then flown to Germany before returning to Israel."

Why?

No doubt there will be a hidden agenda behind this. They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again. Both sides gain so it’s no big deal.

Likely a statement against the legitimacy of the Israeli nation. To hand him over directly would acknowledge the state. "Swaps" like this are done between nations, rather than groups. Hamas and the PLO wouldn't want to be seen as indirectly justifying the state of Israel. Also they can later claim that the swap was done at the behest of Egypt rather than Israel. Again an attempt to deflect any notion of "official" co-operation.

Israel (or which ever side had the 1000 people in prison) will need to make sure all their future prisoners die while being taken into custody to make sure this does not happen again..

But he's going to Germany. Why can't he just go from Egypt to Israel?

As long as they're prepared for the same thing to start happening to Israeli soldiers :).

He's been a prisoner for years. Probably wants a holiday.

Tail end of oktoberfest? I'd want a drink after all that.

Yes because due course and justice are only for white people

Seems ok to me if i were his Family or him. lol and 1000 rock throwing kids is worth that trade.

Similiar reason I suspect. As an Arabic nation Egypt is required to dislike Israel. (even if they don't totally hate them anymore). They can't be seen as co-operating with them any more than Hamas/PLO. Germany makes a perfect white wash as given their Nazi past they would be viewed as the ones who pushed thru the whole deal in the spirit of "righting the wrongs done to the Jews".

And before you ask, for the same reasons he couldn't be sent to Germany directly as Germany would then at worst be seen as doing business with terrorists (Hamas) or at least with a non-recognized state (Palestine)

On the face of it, it does seem a poor deal.

But I suspect Israel may be playing it along these lines:

"We've agreed to your requests, and released 1000 Hamas prisoners. All this has done is increase rocket attacks/suicide bombings etc - therefore we can justify our next retaliatory strikes!"

Alternatively, there might be some who are pushing for it to be a proper catalyst towards increasing peace in the region - I'm sure 1000 palestinian families will be happy with the result too?

1000 people they aren't paying to feed and house any more + a couple of dozen/hundred they can keep tabs on to find more active members of Palestinian terror groups + any they have turned.

and any foot soldiers who return to duty can just be killed in their next confrontation with the IDF.

The prisoner transfer is underway with Gilad Shalit already back in Israel. Though I'm pleased to see Shalit freed and apparently unharmed from his ordeal, I was somewhat depressed this morning to hear the analysis this morning that Israel agreed to the exchange in order to undermine Mahmoud Abbas over his attempts to get Palestine recognised in the UN. Essentially Israel are deliberately handing a massive victory to Hamas so that the people will be more likely to support the violent tactics of Hamas rather than the peaceful, diplomatic tactics of Mr Abbas. It's clear that Israel sees its best interests lying in continued conflict :(

What analysis might that be? Don't you think you should mention a source when making such an important comment? I could summise as to why you failed to mention the source, but I'll wait for your answer first.
