Girl Rig

what exactly are you wanting the pc to do as the premium for a quad core is high and not a lot of things use all 4 cores anyway

have u got a budget

i reply to most specs when im on... nothing to do with a girl.. i nearly never posted cos it was an advert on the front page but meh that would be sexist.. and she could be fit and need a hand building it :p

I know that loads of people have been saying about getting a decent dual core at the moment and upgrading later, but I was thinking that with the price drop on the 22nd, I'll get a quad core, and it will do me for a fair while.

I've heard that a few games already use the quad core (supreme commander) and that all the high-end new ones like Chrysis will so I thought it would be a kinda good investment.

Not possibly a girl, AM a girl :D

still need a budget.. and for money ill do 2 setups to show what you can get with or without quad

^ Its 2K, Amy, can you overclock?? And also the ultra is too expensive for what its worth, go with the GTS or GTX

At the most I would be looking at spending 2k or under, although I don't wanna just buy expensive crap that makes no difference to performance.

:p ;)

I'd probably opt for something like this, you get maybe 90% of the performance at stock speeds and you have the potential to overclock to easily make up the difference yet it only costs about 60% of the budget and that is without even taking into account the proposed price drops. :)

Ok, so if I drop it to the GTX from the ultra, and maybe leave the quad core for now, I should be able to upgrade quite well at a later date?

I like the above suggestion bar a few changes, I've heard that some fast RAM can make a big difference and that so can a fast HD like a raptor, I also like the coolermaster stacker case. Maybe save the money for the moment and get a decent screen instead of ultra+quad, I'm only on a 19".

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback, I really don't wanna bugger this up because it's the first new build I've done.

Yeah I'd leave the Quad Core for now, heck it's gonna be a while before they make a big enough difference to be worthwhile in games bar Supreme Commander.

Single Core lasted for ages, I reckon an upgrade to Quad will be more worthy around mid-next year.

If the quad core drops price like it is supposed to (I've heard figures of almost halving the prices of Core2Duos) then it won't be a huge difference in spend but it does rather depend on how often you upgrade - personally I don't upgrade regularly as I prefer to build a whole new PC so it makes more sense for me to go for the best I can at the time.

PC5300/5400 ought to be easily enough and the boost of 4gb over 2gb should be able to make up for any loss through slacker speeds but it is up to you. NB you will need a 64bit OS to see all the Ram though.

I'm not a huge fan of Raptors given the price/performance especially when the AAKS or 7200.10 drives aren't that much behind in speed terms but again it is your money so don't let me dissuade you if you really want one.

The Stacker is fair enough, cases come down to personal preference in the main.

Even if you do buy faster (but less of) Ram and get a Raptor then you should still be able to fit something like a Dell 2407 into the budget as well as 64bit Vista. :)

2 PSUs?

If you drop from the original Ultra to a GTX, you may regret it later, you said money aint option upto 2K so why get 2nd best ?

There is games that even a GTX gets not too good FPS in, although they are buggy console ports.
You need the card to carry you till possibly early 2008 for replacement flagship card.

Buy the Ultra it will make up for your lack of E-Penis :p

Oh no, Micro$haft man says you need two hard drives. Utter BS. Only buy a second if you really want it ;)

Extra hard drives will improve performance and usability more than most hard ware if they are organized and partitioned properly.Example try downloading a torrent movie playing staker and virus scaning windows C: drive at the same time with one hard drive .Then try it with 3 drives and compare load times and responsiveness .
