Hey guys

Just been to donate blood and i must say what a wonderful feeling :)

ive always put it off due to thinking it would be a pain to get registered etc but its simple as booking an appointment and going down.

You can either register online or just when you go down, and the staff are extremely friendly and help make you cormfatable even offering you biscuits and a cup or three of tea or juice afterwards.

all they do is take a tiny ***** of your finger to test if your aneamic then lie you down on a bed and insert the needle in what feel like just a tiny scratch and then take a pint of blood from you. took me 6 mins 25 seconds to fill up the bag.

definately a worthwhile cause so please guys if youve never thought about doing it or have been thinking about doing it but put it off like me please register as you could change lives especially as blood stocks are relatively low at the moment :P

As i said you can register on the website (http://www.blood.co.uk/) or when you go down. Also if you have any worrys that you might not be able to give blood you can use the following test to find out http://www.blood.co.uk/can-i-give-blood/donor-health-check/.

cheers for taking the time to read guys.

EDIT: http://www.blood.co.uk/giving-blood/where-can-i-go/ just type in your postcode guys and it will give you your closest places to where you live in which you can give blood :P

http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/ukt/ and the organ doner website where you can sign up guys if any of you are intrested :) plus you get a free card so come on guys lmao ;)

Good man! I'm inspired to trot down there.

(is this the thing where they give you a gentleman's magazine and a plastic cup?)

lmao no...they do offer you a plastic cup, however its only filled with water or juice lol. your just literally giving a pint of your blood to them in order to save another persons life :P

Plus you also get to find out your blood type if you don't already know. I've donated 3 times now and about to go for my 4th sometime soon.

never given blood but i've had 6 transfusions so i guess i better put a little back seeing as my blood isn't actually my own lol. :D:eek:

Its odd this, since the blood they've given you should be safe, you would think recipients would be ideal candidates as they would appreciate that blood is important.

Err....:D This is the NHS, who infected thousands with Hep C and HIV through poorly screened blood tranfusions for, amongst others, haemophiliacs in the 70s and 80s.

Not saying that he is that guy, but your assumption that the blood they gave you should be safe is not always black and white.

I donated for the first time the other week. Wasn't too bad but got paranoid after they treated me like I was made of glass following the donation - helped me across the room, escorted me to the toilet etc etc (I wanted to go, they didn't make me). Apparently they do it to all first-timers - second time you're on your own. Does make you think something's gone wrong tho.

Apparently it's really good for you, too. Makes you produce some shiny new blood for yourself. Or is that some urban myth?

I always feel no different than I always do, but I've always to sit down and drink some diluted dilute orange and eat a cake (I like cake) before I can leave. Does annoy me, I've used my own time to donate, don't make me wait some more!

It is only recently that a method to screen blood for prions was discovered, until now there had been no way to detect if the blood you were given was infected.
