Giving up alcohol

If you need alcohol for a social life i think you need a new group of friends.

+1. I'll never understand why loads of people NEED to throw their money at drinks companies to have a good night out. Sure..its your choice but to say you cant have fun unless youre smashed..hmmm. But its true...I personally have friends who *cannot* have fun unless they chuck that chemical down the hatch. I dont understand it but like I said - their choice. Some HAVE the ££ to burn.

But if you cant quit cold...then at least do it sensibly. Ive lost count of the # of times mates have texted me "Thats is just thrown up 3 times Im quitting"...I've collecting these texts in a separate folder and will show them all at the end of the yr...how every other week I got the same text swearin they will quit :P

Hi there. After another night of being really drunk and remembering nothing, waking up with a hangover ive decided im going to either cut down or give up alcohol. I dont like the loss of self control over yourself on alcohol.

Has anyone done this and how has your life improved if so?

I spent the last month without out alcohol, it was horrible, so I picked up a box of cider tonight and it's rather nice!:o

My tolerance to beer has plummeted. Whereas i used to be able to drink 8 cans of carlsberg export in a night 3 times a week, i struggle to finish 4 cans in a sitting now and i never feel like drinking for the rest of the week like i used to. The headaches and horrible thirst early in the morning give me the same feeling as 8 cans used to do.

I stopped consuming alcohol & caffine a few months ago. I took up physical training and fitness instead.

I feel a lot better about myself. More self confident and awake.

I don't like beer. So there was never such a thing as a casual beer at the pub for me. Which probably made it easier for me to stop drinking all together.

I went from drinking to excess more or less every night to just knocking it on the head because I was sick of always being hungover or still a bit fuzzy from the night before. I'm not tee-total but I probably drink once every 2 or 3 months now. Occasionally I'll get a box of Magners in or something. but that's quite rare.

You'll feel better in yourself and you'll save a hell of a lot of money. Just be prepared to have to break the habit of going out every time someone calls.

I don't drink as a rule as I just don't see the need. I usually have a drink on special occasions when others are having a drink too but that's maybe 2 or 3 times a year and that's more because I like the taste of some beers and I drink so little so infrequently there are no health concerns.

I don't mean to offend anyone but drinking regularly to get drunk or to socialise better is somewhat remedial, you're basically self medicating because you're not happy with the way you experience life or the way others experience you.

I'm happy with the way my brain works, if I wasn't I know that consciously trying to improve that situation with learning or experience would help a hell of a lot more than drinking every weekend.

Employment and economy not withstanding there is no way in which alcohol makes the world a better place.
