The TrueCall device acts as a buffer between the phone and the outside world and learns to distinguish between welcome and unwelcome callers.

Phone - "Hello, your through to the ****** household, please say your name after the tone"
Caller - "Its Barry, from Great Deal Home Improvements"

i pick the phone up and say something like "hang on I've just gotta get the kids out of the bath" and leave them on hold for as long as I forget, if they're still on when I come back, I just tell them to get a real job and hang up.

Me too we put them on speaker and see how long they will talk to thin air with an occasional "Just a second the baby fell out of it's cot" or similar to keep them thinking they are getting somewhere. Usually they hang up in less than a minute but we've had some go on and on!

I registered my parents on the telephone protection service as they got lots of cold calls. It costs nothing and works a treat.

We've got a thing called Night Mode on our phone that means that if the person calling is not in your specified phonebook category, it rings silently. Set the "night" time as 09:00 to 08:59 and no more marketing calls so if it does ring it's someone in the family. It doesn't stop the silent messages but it's not bad.
