Glad i got a ater meter fitted

Yeah I know how much it is! :D

I wish I could point to something that's blatantly obvious, but I can't. I don't wash my car, I don't own a pool, a pond or any sort of water feature. We both have showers, although my 2 year old has a bath every night, it's not a big one.

We switched the stop tap off and the water meter doesn't move, so if it's a leak it's in the house, but with everything off I can't notice it moving either.

Faulty meter maybe? or incorrect billing calculation? that really doesn't sound right!

I got a plumber in to take a look and he said with the stop tap off the meter had "creep". Severn Trent are coming out to look.

The plumber I got out think it's leaking just after the meter, possibly on the pipe join. The hole the meter is in has water in it, which he said is a pretty good clue at this time of the year.

So it's just a case of seeing what Severn Trent say and wait for the inevitable wriggling about who's problem it is.

On a side note we have British Gas Home Care 300, I called them at 1200 and the bloke arrived at 1300...I really can't fault that for service!

Leaks after the meter are generally your problem, but if its the join, I would argue the meters either faulty or incorrectly fitted and expect a refund!

The thing is, it's still in the street for about 2 feet after the meter. The woman at Severn Trent said they usually treat the stop tap as the threshold.

We shall see.

i pay ~£55 a month un-metered, ~£660 a year, for only me and my partner.

Using south west waters online calculator, apparently that'll go up to £820~ish if I go on a meter...

But £320 of that is water and £500 for sewerage.

No wonder we have the most expensive water bills in the country :/

Surely the connectors that they used to attach the meter to your existing supply pipe that goes under your property are their problem as they fitted them.

After my meter there is a little bit of plastic pipe with 2 connectors connecting it to my existing lead pipe that goes under my garden. If these leak then I would expect it to be their fault. Meter is under the public footpath.

I found out that I had a leak after getting my first metered bill from Severn Trent. It was halfway down my drive so quite a bit past the meter but the repair was still covered by them. Think they will only do it the once though.

I had a fright a couple of weeks ago when I got a threatening letter off United Utilities. We had informed them we were moving house, but for some reason they had processed it as a cancellation, including the direct debit. So they were demanding over £650 for a years worth of water.

A phone call later, the direct debit was in place and a monthly payment of just over £62 per month. However, this was still a major shock as our water bill in the last house was ~£22 pm.

I knew the council tax band was going up and hence our tax bill. I assumed our water rates would go up also, but not triple! It turns out our rateable value went from £90 to £250 when we moved. :(

United Utilities suggested we go on a meter, but there's not a chance. We have 3 kids, a garden, a car, dishwasher, etc and using their online calculator (being slightly aggressive with my numbers) we'd pay £100 pa more on a meter. We can come off the meter within 12 months, but if we sell the new owner would have no choice but to go on a meter.

I can see how they'd be worth while for big house with few people in them, but we couldn't live having to watch our water usage for fear of massive bills.
