Glasgow Central fire

By the sounds of it the vape shop may not even have had a fire extinguisher as one of the BBC reports mentions a guy who went to a sandwich shop next door and came back with one after the shop keeper came running out shouting fire.

At the very least it sounds like the shop didn't have any planning/contingencies for a minor fire, and I suspect given the age of the buildings they may have lacked the sort of fireproofing/containment that is typically part of any modern building (and possibly very little done to retro fit it).

There's a video of a guy using a hose, which would've made it far worse.

If anything it hope it clamps down heavy on these vape shops (most of which are clear money laundering), really suprised this hasn't happened before.

Lithium batteries in the vapes would have been quite a fire hazard.
Hey now, I'm sure the vape shop had a comprehensive and up to date fire risk assessment and fully considered all the risks ;)

Does feel like one of those symptoms of anarchotyranny where a legitimate business trying to comply with the law fully would have to jump through all the hoops for fire safety, H&S, employment law, accounting etc... but dodgy vape shop can just sit there on one of the busiest streets in the city and they won't get pulled up on any of that.

Government /HMRC don’t seem that bothered by money laundering, quite happy to get their cut of the black economy if the public don’t complain too much. The number of Turkish (Albanians in reality) barbers up here now is comical.

Its crazy to me how theyre actively promoting money laundering, criminal activities. I genuinely don't understand. Such an easy win to lower overall crime rate.

it's not just up there. We've got 3 on our small high street in surburban Surrey, plus 2 nail bars, and a vape shop.

There's a guy on the beeb who said helped to try and put the fire out & they had to go next door to Subway to borrow a fire extinguisher.

I thought it was a legal requirement for extinguishers in a retail location , laughable that a vape shop wouldn't have any. Guess when your busy money laundering, you don't have time for Health and Safety.

I'll be honest, having a fire extinguisher in compliance with H&S may not be enough, remember things like H&S requirements are the minimum the law requires, going above them is often a good idea for things like fire safety (IEi H&S says to have X extinguishers you go for X +1 minimum, or add in things like fire blankets).

But it wouldn't surprise me at all if the shop didn't have a functioning extinguisher, a lot of otherwise legitimate businesses will try and cut corners if they don't think they'll be found out, it's one of the reasons the fire services fight to avoid funding cuts in relation to their fire prevention work, yes things like house fires are down from what they used to be, but that doesn't mean that you want to have the fire service stop voluntary inspections/advice, let alone not have the manning to do the business related checks on a regular basis.
