Gmail app not receiving emails properly?

Hey guys, when I'm not sure if I'm just expecting something that isn't supposed to happen but I figured I would have got my emails in real-time and be notified.
I don't seem to get any notifcations, I have to open the gmail app and refresh.
There is also quite a big delay between when I can view an email in the app and desktop.

Do I have something set up wrong?

What phone? What version of Android?

My Galaxy Nexus occasionally misses emails until I manually sync, but usually they come in within a minute or two of getting them on my desktop.

Make sure you have enabled sync in Settings -> Accounts & Sync -> Your e-mail

I don't have auto-sync enabled, is there a way to allow individual things to sync automatically?

That's what Gmail will do if you have sync enabled, it "pushes" email to your phone instead of "polling" therefore using a lot less battery and CPU time. It's also faster at receiving email..

You can sync individual labels if that's what you're after instead?
