Gmail does not push...

So was lucky enough to bag an N4, and have set up my Gmail account on there, but it refuses to push new messages to the phone! I will get no notifications of new emails at all. It will only pull down emails when I go into the Gmail app on my N4, then it will pull them all down.

The sync on my Gmail account has everything ticked apart from play books, movies & music (as I don't use them). Gmail is ticked, but only synced at 7:30am this morning, which was the last time I went into the app.

I had an iPhone4 previously, so unsure if it may be settings I have changed within the Gmail web client causing issues?

Apparently Google are stopping push soon for Gmail which is a bit of a pain, so this may be why it's not working for you.

I don't know what to suggest really, do you still have your iPhone?

Why on earth would they stop push? I'd think it's a pretty vital feature tbh! Do you have a source for that?

iPhone has long gone

The ActiveSync they're stopping has no effect on the app.

The only suggestion I have is to check the account settings in the GMail app. It should just work, really

Remember my gf had similar problems with Gmail on her SIII. There's a load of settings you can change in the app including the "Manage Labels" to sync which might work

There's your problem. They need to be blue.

The question is, why have they gone white?

I don't know why are they white, and I didn't even realise this indicated an issue! I'm behind a work firewall during the day, and if I switch it off my wi-fi, my signal bar does go blue. So this is the issue you think then?

I've just tested it by taking my phone off wi-fi, and sending a test email, but still no push :(

Yeah, blue = connected to Google's services, white = not. The firewall is going to be the cause of that I'm afraid.

It should have started working when you dropped off the wifi, though. If you already had an unread mail in your inbox, it wouldn't have sent you a new notification (I think).

Strange that even when with blue signal bar, it's not pushing messages to me :(

Are you 100% sure that the Gmail Sync is ON?

/edit - just re-read the OP. Have you tried un-ticking 'gmail'. Then maybe turn phone off/on. Then go back and re-tick gmail?

I found the same thing when I tried my new Nexus 4 this morning. Assumed I'd just not configured something. Switched back to my old phone now as I don't have time to play about and migrate my stuff today.

/edit just realised I don't need a SIM inside to use the N4. Came straight up this time with an email notification in the notification bar. No idea why it didn't work earlier.
