Hi I cant make my mind up which way to upgrade next and could use some opinions.

My budget would allow me to either-

Upgrade my current comp- A new 780i mobo, 1 more 8800GTX (i already have 2) and a 1200w psu.

Or wait for next year by which time i'll have saved enough to start a new build which would look something like this-

P35 mobo(or latest come feb/march), Penryn cpu probably 2.5ghz one, decient ram/psu/ect and the new 9800GTX.

Bearing in mind how buggy the 680i chipsets have been and the 780i's may be, do you guys reckon a really good set up with a single graphics card would be better

Given that you have Nehalem coming out in roughly a year and a bit, are you willing to spend this amount on a current setup? True, I could be wrong and Nehalem will be out later, but that is something to consider.

Also, if I were you I would not waste money on 3 GTXs when the next gen cards will at some point blow that configuration out of the water. Wait, wait, and wait a little more for the G92 GPUs and the next gen of Nvidia cards....

Ask yourself if your having any speed problems with your current setup.
If you're upgrading for the hell of it then don't bother.

Do you have a 30" screen? That is the only real case where tri sli (with 8-16x aa) shows its worth.

Yeah Nehalem does look really good but i reckon thats a long way off atm, Im defo going to want my new comp finished before March or as soon as the 9800 is released.

I use a 22" Samsung, gaming at 1620x1050.
I am just upgrading for the hell of it as my current set up is pretty good at most things but building new set ups is fun :)

You can wait for ever. When the next generation cards come out. Why not wait for the next generation and the next generation and the next generation?

You should wait.
Then wait some more.
After that wait some more.

It is very unwise to buy any computer hardware as they is always something better around the corner.

It is also unwise to declare in a public forum such as this, your intention to purchase any current tech as the 'Waiters' will strike. :)

OR, know that the 8800gtx is over a year old and its replacement is already over due. stop being silly, its actually good advice. just how well do you think 3 gtx's would work anyway?

Usually the next generation is around twice as fast as the last generation. So if 3 gtx's can give double the fps of a gtx then it maybe somewhere around the speed of the 9800 but we have waited so long this time i wouldn't be surprised if the 9800 is over double the speed of a gtx. For me i would stick to the 2 gtx's you have and then get a 9800gtx.

If you've got money to burn mate and are willing to wait for the 9800, especially as you have 2x GTXs running at 1620x1050,
i would invest in mabye a spot of water cooling and getting that Q6600 upto lightspeeds!! :D

This is purley on the presumption form your sig that you dont have water already and are just looking for a project for the fun of it?

1680x1050, I think at the current time its stupid paying out for a THIRD GTX, hell even one GT is enough for me.

I would wait for the 9800 before upgrading your graphics and I think if you have a quad core allready I would also not upgrade CPU untill Nehalem especially if the quad is a G0 Q6600 getting to near 4Ghz a Penryn may only offer 10% increase in performance, hardly worth the purchase, we'll have to wait for benchmarks though.

Does the 780i mobo's actually support Quad Core Penryn? I heard they wont for some reason.

Your utterly mad :), get a 30" screen or at least a 24", cant see the point in spending all that money and runing at 22". You need to get your gaming up to 1900x1200 before you get another card imo.

Even at 1900x1200 I dont think 3 is worth it just yet.

Would waitand see what 9800gtx has to offer and then buy , at least one:D

Power needs would be known and , with luck, there may be one or two new m-boards around made with it in mind .

Just wait out the 9800's, i struggle to imagine anything that'll seriously require the total power of 2 GTX's never mind 3 of them at the moment.
