Go 8800GTX x3 or wait for 9800GTX ?

Thanks for the replies, Yeah i'll probably just hold out for the 9800,

I dont really fancy having a space heater sitting under my desk if one 9800 can come close to the same perfomance.

The main reason i was wanting to upgrade is the 650i fatality mobo i have is holding back my cpu (it is a Q6600 G0) and its stuck at 2.7. So i have itchy feet and want to upgrade but from hearing your advice i reckon i'll put up with it and wait for the 9800 and build a new single card system around it.

OR, know that the 8800gtx is over a year old and its replacement is already over due. stop being silly, its actually good advice. just how well do you think 3 gtx's would work anyway?

Judging from reviews dotted around the net of 3 x Ultras in tri-sli quite well albeit at 30" monitor resolutions.

However in the ops case given the monitor he is using it would be completely pointless. I would go as far as to say 2 8800GTX are overkill.

Get a P35C DS3R or a new X38 mobo and get shot of your 650i.

def! I'm playing COD4 with everything on high and 4x aa etc very very comfortably at 1680x1050 on my 2407 (I use the lower res unscaled as I sit quite close and 1920x1200 hurts my head!) and I expect aside from crysis COD4 has to be one of the slightly more taxing games and 1 8800GTX doesn't break a sweat.

2x GTX's allow me to play Crysis at max settings at pretty decent frame rates where as 1 isnt enough, your right about COD4 the frame rates are mega fast @1680x1050 with all settings maxed.

To the OP
There isn't anything better than the GTX to buy at the moment.
Keep your money in your wallet.

If the 9800GTX really does come out around feb and is really 2.5x faster than a 8800GTX as claimed then it would be worth waiting for it... thats what I'm doing atm... tho I got a bad itch to buy a couple of 8800GTS and SLI em.

Placed an order with ocuk this morning, gonna go down the single 9800 route so i've specced a comp that will allow upgrades to penryn when it comes out.

So for now i'll take 1 GTX out my old system and put it in the new set up, hopefully now i can overclock my cpu much higher.

Does this system look ok?-

If it's for the fun of building it consider modding your case or making your PC silent. These activities can absorb lots of cash and be at least as interesting as a new build. I think you'll get more gains from these activities than you would from an upgrade right now.

I've just bought the above components, once i've found a set up im happy with i'll then start modding my case and look into water cooling etc
