I went go karting for the first time a few days ago with the office in Streatham.

It was awesome. I had one major problem in hat the 160cc karts struggled with my 100kg weight. I literally lost 2 places by the end of the first straight from starting every race. Also, grip was an issue, but proper drifts were So much fun.

I am ashamed to admit I lost to a girl. All the lighweights just added so much distance on the straights i couldnt make up the time through the corners.

Ill petition for Karts with more power next time.

Anyone else like karting?

It's brilliant fun, I went with Phate, -westy- and his girlfriend, was brilliant fun. I came last over all. We had two 15min timed lap sessions. I did better the second session, as I was prepared to push the kart a lot more.

One of the main reasons I sucked though is because since an accident I had in 2005 I've never been too keen on pushing cars around corners, like getting the arse out...but that did a fair bit for my confidence which is why I did better the second session and shave off about 1.5 seconds off my time when everyone else got like .5 of a second off. :)

Hopefully we'll be going again next month. :D

Indoors. What's Streatham's track like? I saw the adverts outside saying £20 for 30mins or so. Seemed like a good price.

Did probably about an hour of karting for a tenner at a mates (his parents run a big hall place, which has a kart track) and really, really enjoyed it. I also suffered losing to a lighter female opponent :/

More weight can be a good thing. I lost to my friend when karting and he's nearly 40KG more than myself. My excuse is he had more weight on the back wheels :p my back end always slid out. Out doors i think is better

I've only done go karting once... on a stag do in Estonia. It was insane, 14 guys all incredibly hung over hurtling round an outdoors track. It was more like a destruction derby at points. I came 3rd out of 14 though which I was happy with for my first time. Lots of adrenaline, would love to do more over here.

Track was dampish to start when we were racing, span out a couple of times under heavy braking before a corner

I love it. Makes me wonder why people buy "track" cars, when every road car I've driven on a track has been less fun than a pro-kart on a decent circuit. I've driven indoors in a few locations, and pro karts at Hoddesdon, somewhere near Telford, Leicester, Buckmore and Lakeside. Whilst the organisation might not be the best, I found the Lakeside track to be probably the most challenging. Seriously hard work to get fast consistent laps, and I came away with more than a few bruises. It was also the first time I've driven against someone I knew to be genuinely good, in that case a 2005 kart champion. Helps reign in your ego when you're two seconds a lap off the leader, despite being faster that most.

Being fat isn't that much of a problem till you start mixing it with the really fast people

Hang on a minute... is there anyone that would be interested organising a karting event?! Would be something Id love to attend if it was in the middle of the UK :p

the streatham course was indoor.

it is £20 for 30 mins.

The course itself is in an old bus garage; about 400m in length.

A bit too small imho; you never really got scary fast and overtaking opportnities were minimal.

I loved it. I just got infuriated losing two places at the start and then only having 4 laps to make them up.

OcUK karting has been discussed many times but its never materialised :(

I'd be up for a karting event, haven't done it in years. I know of a few good circuits in south wales but I suspect something more central would be preferred.

Any good circuits near the RR that we can descend upon afterwards?

I've only been karting twice but loved it both times.

First time was only spoilt slightly by a friend of a friend of a hanger on to our group who went flat out through the tyre barrier, which had us all kicking around for 40 minutes whilst they put it back together, then proceeded to the entrance desk to ask about compensation for her sprained thumb

Place in Norwich wasn't the best but still fun, closed down years ago though and I don't know of the nearest decent place to go now :(
