My friends wd cloud nas has died and he wants to replace it

He need local windows / mapped drive access and access via Web interface to download / upload files.

The model of his current drive is no longer supported.

What are the go to nas boxes for local amd remote access?

The three main brands are Asustor, QNAP & Synology. The knee-jerk response is Synology but they tend to drop support faster than the other two and try to force you to use their drives. They also lag on hardware specs, still keeping to 1Gb Ethernet where the others have 2.5Gb. QNAP and, to a lesser amount, Asustor carry the stigma of ransomware attacks a couple of years ago.

Local access is a given and trivial. I don't use remote access as I don't want to open my LAN to the outside world but I doubt there's much to chose between them.

It would help to know how many drive bays are required and what sort of storage capacity is needed.
If your friend is willing to buy secondhand it may be worth putting something in the Wanted section here to see what turns up.
It will need to be new, he only has 500gb of data so 2tb would be plenty room to grow

In that case I'd recommend the Asustor AS5202T. Asustor has cheaper 2-bay offerings but they have less powerful ARM CPUs rather than Intel and non-upgradable RAM.
If you want to stick with HDDs then WD Red Plus or Seagate Ironwolf are what I'd go for but SSD is a viable option at 2TB and would be very fast and silent.
thanks ive suggested he takes a look at that one
