godaddy thunderbird forwarding

HI all

Finally got round to setting up my godaddy email to thunderbird on my vista desktop. all works fine, emails in emails out.

so i think grate...

but

Just tried to use the web based email. and all my emails are gone. So I assume it has just downloaded all my emails.

I would like them to stay there if possible, this is how my work email one is set up,

its usefully as they are stored remotely, so if computer die's its all ok as they are sitting up on a file server somewhere.

also if I'm abroad say, still got easy access.

Sounds like you are using a POP3 server in Thunderbird? If so you need to tell Thunderbird to keep the messages on the server for you. POP3 will delete the messages off the server once you've read them.

You need to go to the account settings then server settings section to tell TB to keep POP3 messages.

will try this when i get home, is there a way to put the messages back on the sever?

does this mean i can use two computers with thunderbird on? or is this going to mess things up

I would have thought the messages you've already read won't be easy to put back on the server. You could forward them to yourself?

You can use two computers with Thunderbird on as long as you keep Thunderbird set to leave the messages on the POP3 server until you delete them.

this is what i was think i would have to do. stuff like my AV user name and password, also my OCUK invoices would be useful to have off site. will just email them to myself.

EDIT: I suppose it has done one hell of a spring clean of my emails

also are the emails marked as read if you use Thunderbird to read them?

Godaddy is a place you can get domain name and hosting. it reasonably cheep, but not the best out there. no idea if it has an IMAP option but I doubt it. sorry

IMAP seems to be 100 times easier to use than POP3 as th emails staty on the central server and you use thunderbird or whatever email client as a window to view them in! Is there any reason to use POP3 over IMAP?

If you don't have an IMAP option then POP3 has to do, I did get my account a few years ago. and wasn't really searching for this option.

worked like a charm

but it doesn't say the message is read on the serve, but this is no big deal

IIRC, Gmail let you use IMAP, so can you not get GoDaddy to forward the mail to an account with someone that does IMAP?

Gmail does indeed use IMAP. Got it going through Thunderbird here.

IMAP just makes things a heck of a lot simpler and easier, all you do is enter your incoming and outgoing server addresses for a new account and your password and email address and your emails show up, you can read them and just leave them, you c an check them from anywhere and they'll all be there! - I hope all that was correct!

but thats how its now set up.

the only thing that seams tempting is the ability to remotely move stuff round folder. but i can do that locally, not really worth the fuss. POP3 is probably rubbish, but thunderbird can fix most of its flaws, including downloading headers only

I would say easier to setup and manage.

You are probably OK as you are. However my three email accounts in Thunderbird all use the IMAP protocol. When Gmail allowed IMAP I quickly changed from POP3 to IMAP for that.
