Just finished watching it, had a bit of bloat to it and the last act seemed rushed but it was excellent to hear the original Godzilla theme when he was attacking
I too, finally watched this, after not seeing it on the big screen. It doesn't have the dialogue you get with the Monsterverse movies, but just like Shin Godzilla, it really does show the power of what Godzilla should be about. The movie for what they had to work with is one of the best Japanese Godzilla movies ever made.
First Japanese Godzilla I've seen, it was ok 7/10. The effects were good but the design of Godzilla himself looked so derpy, like a windup toy when it was walking around. It just never felt alive, it's arms barely moved and it didn't blink. I enjoyed the story around the aftermath of the war, that was really well done. Agree that there was far too much random shouting though, you can make a line have impact without having to scream it lol.
Didn't understand the end though, what was with the weird focus on the woman's neck? And Godzilla can regenerate from a little bit of flesh? That seems a bit silly.
I recently watched it myself, my main takeaway of it is its just another re-telling of the original 54(i've watched the 54 a couple years ago).
With the exception its right after WW2, while the original 54 was set a couple years after.
I feel people have blown it out of proportion, probably because of the budget had absolutely pooped on west.
The overall film was good to watch though, the characters are more likeable than from any era of Godzilla films.
Minus one for re-telling the 54 story with more likeable human characters, while Shin Godzilla is re-telling from a modern era perspective.
Plus:
The original had a scientist creating the oxygen destroyer, while in Minus one they used existing scientific technology

Just watched this tonight and would give it a 5/10. The story and main actor was pretty lame on the whole. Godzilla itself looked cool, and the heat ray effect was awesome.
Majority of Japanese films I’ve watched over the years go that extra 10-20% over in terms of the overacting and shouting compared to western films. While I love Battle Royale, I find it really quite annoying how much they shout, just their style.
As for the other bits:
The focus on her neck was to show the weird growth that was happening just beneath the surface in the last few seconds of the scene. And it’s a monster film, have to suspend your disbelief a little with the regeneration considering what has just happened before!
Yeah I got that I'm just not sure if I'm supposed to know what it meant, is the dark veins a reference to something from other Godzilla stuff I haven't seen?

Ah right, read as though you hadn't seen that particularly detail. I'm a relative Godzilla novice, so would have to look to other people really, but a quick look on reddit seems to yield nothing solid lore-wise. There's only theories, but seems to be a consensus she's become infected, hence how she even survived the blast at all. They spoke in the aftermath scene of how the public needed to be careful due to remnants of Godzilla etc.
