GOES-14 first image of earth

If it's geostationary then it's only ever going to see the same view of earth, surely? All that will change is the cloud cover. What's the point in that :/

I assume the main point is to raise environmental concerns with the US government, by showing changes etc in one area - which just happens to include the USA.

And anyway, most geostationary satellites can be moved to another location if required.

I really don't understand why they have a visible light camera in Black and white.

The whole reason to show a visible light photo of the Earth as a whole from space is to show it's beauty (with the blues, whites, greens of the land masses) - All this shows is a contrast between the sky and land.

Unless there are colour shots available somewhere - whats the point ? It's just turned an potentially amazing photo into a just good photo.

There is a whole network of GOES satellites. They monitor atmospheric conditions that lead to hurricanes, tornadoes, flash floods, tornadoes and even hail storms. They can estimate rainfall, track storms and even monitor volcano plumes. They are a vital tool in weather monitoring and forecasting.

Take a look here for more information:

Superb picture, loving the textures. It really doesn't need to be colour.

maybe it's taken with uv, ir or radar, rather than visible light.

Image formats can be infrared, water vapour, visible, raw, radar. Formats can be merged to produce images.

The significant events images are worth a look at just to give you a taste of what can be produced:

It is worth looking around the whole site.
