I'm going to Portugal this week and I'll be taking my old G1 with me. What do I need to do to disable the data connection so I dont run up a huge bill?

Better still is there an app in the android market that'll do it for me?

You need to disable data roaming in the network settings, should do the trick was what I did when I had my android and went abroad with.

Thanks for the replies, sorted now :)

If anyone else is interested, there's an app call 'Quick Settings' which does all this and more plus it's free and highly rated:

Hi Reflux.

Where the option for "only use 2G" ?

In the network mode section i get the choice to use wcdma, or gsm.
Is that the bit you mean ?

Wireless and Networks > Mobile Networks > Use Only 2G Networks

That's what I get on my 2.2 Nexus One.

gsm is 2g
no it isn't;

Ahhh ok.
So the wcdma must be the 3g option :)
No, WCDMA is something completely different.

Ahhhh silly me, thinking all android is the same.
It's a little different on my Desire.
the difference is because the G1's running Android 1.6. Android 2.0 and onwards is rather different.

Ah yeah HTC have banged their own bits in the settings menu.

no, all copies of android 2.0 onwards should look the same as your desire or the Nexus etc...
