After a long break from Wow (not played since level 70 in Burning Crusade)
I'm considering re-subbing back to play some WoW! Ok I know it might be a little crazy, but I have a few questions.

1, Do I need to buy the WOTLK expansion to be able to play, once I make my account active again, or can I just play upto Burning Crusade content?

2, My current version of WoW on my machine is 2.4.3 or something, so quite old, how much will I need to download to play again, or is a download a waste of time, as most of the patches are included in WOTLK?

3, Is there an 'Invite a friend back to WoW scheme still active? I have a couple of WoW accounts and it might be good to try before buy!

1. You can play TBC stuff happily, and have access to the new talent trees (but obviously no level 80 spells and so on)

2. You will have to update quite a bit I think.

3. I believe it is.

Hey Griffy, that is so strange.. I have just resubbed tonight and haven't played since May this year. Download wotlk expansion from the main website as you can activate 10 days of wotlk for free in your 'account management'

But yes you can play with TBC up to level 70 if you wish

Yes and I can throw you a free 10 day pass if you tell me your server and one of your characters names.

Sorry It's what I think of everytime WoW is mentioned :D

Have you not tried other games also or have you got your eyes set on WoW?

Aion is meant to be good, and has quite a big expansion planned for it.

I play lots of FPS games on the PC, and also use my PS3 for games.
I play Warhammer online, which I enjoy, I used to play LOTRO but found it lacking in fun! I've not resubbed for Eve for a couple of months either, trying to decide what to play rather than try and play them all!
I've not tried Aion, but was told its more of a grindfest and doesn't seem to promote any teamplay?

Go to a bar and meet some people. trust me on this - social interaction will make you forget about WoW completely. Even better is if you find a girlfriend - it's like quitting cigarettes and moving on to heroin that heals the soul. It's that good.

Thread derail incomming. But seriously, I'd usually /facepalm at a comment like this but to be honest I think you're right.

I played WoW since October 05 until about March 09. I'd honestly say I was addicited. I loved the game and I cut right back on my social interactions just to play it and to be honest it did me no good what so ever.

I kind of let my self go, got really bad social anxiety to the point I was agrophobic and had to have councilling sessions, put on a lot of weight due to eating and sitting at a computer all day.

I was recently thinking about going back to WoW purely because I've been so bored lately as I'm waiting to start my new job in January, but thinking about all this has changed my mind.

Although WoW is a good game and I've met a lot of online friends on there, it's probabaly best if I never went back to it.

Same as me exactly, but in another MMORPG. Except I'm back playing again casually so I can play when bored at my flat and can also socialise online with a couple real life friends who picked it up....

No. You can play up to TBC fine, but for level gains and quest zones after TBC you will obviously need WoTLK.

You will need to download patches and update, yes. It wont make much of a difference if you put WoTLK on aswell as no matter what there's still going to be the same amount of patches.

3, Is there an 'Invite a friend back to WoW scheme still active? I have a couple of WoW accounts and it might be good to try before buy!

Yes.

So back to the original 3 questions......

Right basically none of us here can answer this for you. Any MMO takes a lot of time away from your life regardless of wife, kids, friends etc. I used to play wow from anywhere between 1 hour to 8+ hours of the day depending on uni etc. I quit the game around 7 months ago because of how much time it demands, but I purchased it back around 1 week ago. Many would probably think that I would gradually sink back into my old ways, unbelievably I dont find it interesting anymore, cancelled my sub a day ago and know now I will never go back to playing that game.

If you can keep your life on track and play great, otherwise get a gym membership and a decent SP and MP game :)

Ever heard of Darkfall Online?

http://www.eu.darkfallonline.com/

It's a fantastic game, very different to the games you get now which are PvE orientated, fairground mmo.

Darkfall's a bit like Eve, kill someone, take their stuff.

and the second expansion comes out tommorow and is reigniting the game.

I played Darkfall. As far as I can remember it was a HUGE grindfest. A brilliant concept though.

It's changed dramatically since then

you get 6x skill rate from killing mobs with spells/archery 4x with Melee.

and since the second expansion is hopefully going to be released tommorow Archery and Melee are getting specialisations.

I'm 33 and quit wow a few months ago, mainly because of the amount of impatient kids playing it and nerd rage..... You will notice that pretty quickly!
