I've got an interview next week (Thursday) that I only was informed about 10 days before hand for. I intend on wearing suit type smart clothes without the jacket, let's hear some tales of woe/people's thoughts on this.

Personally I dont think it (should) make a difference, and better than wearing my old ill fitting suit jacket. Previously I have worn suits etc for interviews however dress codes from interviewees I've seen has varied.

For info it's for a graduate role which I have strong experience for (however I will be asking for a higher salary than the standard interviewee)

If it's an office job or similar, or anything remotely 'business' focussed - deffo suit.

If it's for a role in which people don't wear suits and probably think that people that wear suits are odd (i.e. an outdoor walking / guide role), don't wear a suit.

Common sense prevails! :p

I went for a 'meeting' with a Director of a building trades web site, looking to do sub contract work for them, I could easily have turned up in jeans and jumper (he did)

I wore a suit, he explained he would normally pitch the new sub contractors to the other two directors, before a final decision was made.

he decided there and then to sign me up, stating as it was a customer facing role in domestic environments, someone who understood the importance of a suit to first meetings/job interviews was exactly what he wanted.

he also stated it was a pity his other guys were not as considerate

ALWAYS WEAR A SUIT, its not big/clever not too, you might think you want to express yourself and be a little different, just don't, unless your a hipster type who wonders why he never gets work.

if you are then good luck with it, you will need it.

Challenge accepted :p. I won't be able to get a tailored suit now within the time of the interview. ;D. I figure it's better to wear smart well fitting clothes I'm comfortable in than an iller fitting suit.

Wear a suit.

Preferably 3 piece, cuff-linked shirt, tie clip, double windsor knot, new black socks, shoes so shiny you can see your face, plus a fresh hair cut and a shave. Or at least that's what worked recently for me.

First impression is the most important!

Wear a suit. I remember going for an interview and there was a girl who turned up in casual clothes. Needless to say she didn't get the job.

Previously had people at my work I've helped interview in far more casual clothes and she was a definite hire (and got the job) over the other 4 candidates.

Also previously got a job in a supermarket with smart clothes (not a suit)... I dont really see that as an achievement.

In the majority of cases wear a suit; navy or charcoal/grey, white shirt, plain tie, polished black shoes and belt.

I've never owned a suit (or a tie and 'proper' shoes for that matter) and have been to many interviews, and seeing as how I've worked all my life I don't think my not wearing a suit and tie combo had any bearing on whether I got the job or not.

Brown shoes (new) , grey trousers, (new), white shirt and tie.

If it makes people feel better I would also be rather sweaty most occasions in a suit!

Wish me luck!

I certainly do wish you the best, of course :)

You will probably be fine. The reason for always recommending a suit is that not wearing one might be the differentiator between you and another candidate. But it isn't always an issue.

you could walk into M&S tomorrow, and mix and match a suit for under £130, that will give a tailored fit, fling a nice shirt and tie in to complement,

once worn, stick it straight back into the wardrobe for next time, then don't eat too many pies until then (this happens with me, then trousers are tight lol)

and good luck with your interview, that fact you are taking the time to research this means your serious about getting it.
