Going for silence not for speed

As title says really, more of a htpc than anything thing else and my hdd is the loudest thing. What would you recommend?

Samsungs are generally thought to be quiet compared to most, however if you want real silence then you might have to go for an enclosure like the Silentmaxx that OcUK used to sell.

I've found my Hitachi Deskstar very quiet (certainly compared to my mates Raptor) and good value as well:-

7200.10's are fast and quiet. I have three of them in my PC, I can only barely hear them and I've got a cheapo Zen case.

Can you get away with a small drive? What about a laptop HDD or if you're feeling flush an SSD drive?

The Samsung Spinpoint series are incredibly quiet. These are all I have used in my last 3 upgrades and they really are very quiet, even when seeking. Slap in some silicon grommets and they are even better.

I have 4 2.5" drives in my HTPC and they are quieter than the single 400GB Samsung drive they replaced
