Totally self indulgent "feed me sympathy" thread.

Following a bike accident 3 weeks ago I can no longer raise my elbow more than a few inches. It transpires it's because the tendon on the front of my shoulder has detached from my humerus, taking a large chunk of bone with it.

Tomorrow I'm going under to have the floating chunk of bone - complete with ligament and tendon - reattached.

Never had general anaesthetic. Never been cut open before. Never had titanium screws put in me.

A bit nervous :(

Toil be fine, it's just like falling to sleep and unable to resist. You won't feel or remember anything.
All the best, but they know what they doing and you get loads of fit nurses helping you and bossing you around. Its a nice perk.

My tip: Be thinking about something awesome when the anaesthetic kicks in.

I remember starting to think about scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final (aged 10) but I spent the next 5 hours dreaming about the match of the day theme tune playing over and over again - d'oh.

General anaethetic complications include:
  • permanent nerve damage, causing paralysis or numbness
  • a serious allergic reaction to the anaesthetic (anaphylaxis)
  • death

General is great, you wake up and are still numb all over :D

The one time I went in for a general when I was about 16 I had a really sore neck before I went in. Woke up with no pain! until several hours later when it was all worn off and it now felt worse than before lol.

You'll be fine.

Just think when you wake up you’ll be in the hands of all those lovely nurses. Don’t worry about it, it will all be fine. Good luck. :)

:) Thanks for all the reassuring words!

Surgeon says they'll put a block on my arm so it'll be numb when I wake up, I know I'm going to forget this and brick myself when I wake.

I probably shouldn't think of anything too awesome, just in case there are some unexpected side affects...

You'll be fine!

Just think you could be like me, waiting to find out when you can have tubes inside your stomach fixing a Hitial Hernia :p

:( oh dear

Compared to what could have been, or what other people have been through on here I admit my case is an extremely meagre one.

I'll post some pics when I'm back ;)

Again you will be fine :) you are barely left alone for half an hour before you go under, so anesthetists/doctors/nurses etc are all making sure your feeling ok, they don't want a panicking patient!
Going under is easy, the second time around I don't even remember them counting me in, I just felt it coursing up my arm and I was gone :D and you wake up so dosed up that's not really a problem either, you can feel anxious though, well I did no idea why though!
Ive got plenty of Titanium and bolts inside me too :p

General is awesome, feel a slight pinch when they put the thing in your hand/arm. Feel a slight tingling running up your arm then bang, your in a bed with 2 nurses standing over you.

You'll feel a bit woozy for a few hours after it, I remember being starving and had my op about 10am (30min op). They were just serving lunch when I woke up, thought ooh great soup and a sandwich. Took one bite and nearly barfed. Pie, chips and beans at dinner time was good though and they let me go after that. I was on a ward full of old boys who couldn't believe I was in and out in the course of a working day.

Never had general anaesthetic.

A bit nervous :(

I'm going to help you with my awesome powers of mental suggestion.

Picture this: hot nurses in tight, skimpy nurse's uniforms. More cleavage than you could motorboat in a lifetime. Lots of bending over. You get the idea.

No need to thank me.

And I'll bring you back to reality with this picture..

Doris, in her 40s and slightly overweight in an unattractive NHS uniform bending over you. You pray to god you don't see any cleavage, albeit it would be more than you could every motorboat in a lifetime, you just wouldn't want to ;)

Awsome just before they give you the white stuff to put you under they give you some awsome drug that makes you relaxed this stuff is awsome and you can get away with anything while on it, the few op's i've had in the past i've chatted the nurses up made rude and forward comments etc etc plus it feels great almost like being drunk but full aware and fully alert not sleepy like you do when ya drunk.......

Also with all the op's ive had i try to stay awake as long as possible when they say count backwards from 10 they inject the white cold feeling stuff then you start furtherst ive got is to 4 LOL then i'm out..... next thing you remember is waking up with about 4 people staring and calling your name, your well doapy at this point and start to feel pain again..... most likely they will stick some more pain releif in recovery if you ask for it....

Good luck you will be fine

Fireskull, It was you I was thinking of who'd been through significantly worse!

For various complicated reasons I've ended up private - hot nurses ahoy!

I woke up during the op for about 5secs when i was having my tounsils out!, How do i know this?. Cause I remember the doctor looking over me, me spitting blood out and what was on my face at the time. Woke up got my stuff and there was the device and the doc was outside

Very rare case that though and we are talking 20+years ago

Last time I had surgery (as a kid). They put on the sonic cartoon and then gassed me. Was a pretty good episode. Will never know how it ends now though. :(
