My mother is running a HD2 but is having trouble with android (text too small, etc)

Going to load wp7 onto it but i need to move her contacts and sms across.

Can wp7 sync contacts with a gmail account or similar? Or does it all need dumping to a .csv file?

Does wp7 have wireless tethering? (got 3 hd2 in the family and never run winfows on any of them!)

You can't move SMS messages from WP7.

Only way to move contacts will be with Google Contacts. WP7 doesn't have the ability to import contacts any "normal" way (although Nokia Windows Phones specifically have two apps that allow you to share/transfer contacts).

The current version of WP7.5 (Tango) has wireless tethering. At least on Nokia ones.

As an aside if your Mum is having trouble with Android text size I would try and find a WP to play with first. It is pretty small in Messaging on WP7.

oooh, could be useful, i'd tried doing it in the options list but it left the caller list as small text still. Be great if an ap could sort it, cheers.

There is a launcher out there that has big buttons etc... Sorry, I can't remember what it is called but I read about it around 2 weeks ago.

If you copy her contacts over onto a live/hotmail account for her, then she can sync all of those. Recently had to go the other way and it worked out fine/

hehe, i'm a fully brainwashed android user, never occurred to me to use an MS based contacts list!

Can you not sync back to google contacts and then go onto contact on the website and export the vcard, which you surely can load into a windows phone?

That's what i'm asking, i've never used wp so i don't know what it can do.

Nope. There is a Nokia made Lumia exclusive app that was released recently that can though.

To give you an idea of how further questions will go... :p

... WP doesn't even have the ability to set or edit an APN. As standard it loads them from the SIM card on first boot and that's that. For example if you wanted to swap SIM cards while on holiday it would require a full phone reset to get data to work. Nokia again had to create an app to solve this.

Doesn't it allow APN update via Network Operator SMS?

I'd suggest putting your contacts on windows live (yeah, the messenger/mail thing) and then signing in on your phone, this will autosync. In order to import your contacts to Live I'd do it via contacts.google.com export and then import on the new windows live mail client (which is now shiny outlook for web).

Thats quite true, for Non Nokia WP7 phones all you do is: "Settings" -> Mobile Network area click on "add apn"..!

For HTC Device Users
7,) Click on the "Windows" key in the middle of the phone to take you back to the main screen. Install the HTC Connection Setup application ( to check to see if you already have it look for "Connection Setup" in the applications on your phone.) from the "HTC Apps" in the marketplace application
8.)Run the Application "Connection Setup"
9.) Click on the "Carrier" and select "whatever you want"
10.) Click the the tick to save
11.) Restart the phone
12.) On the "Settings" -> Mobile Network area click on "add apn" and enter the following details
APN: ****
Username *

That requires rooting. OP, do you know how to root?

He's using an HD2 a phone that has never had an official Android port for it, its a windows mobile phone.

Stupid question but can't you just sync straight from Google by adding the account to your phone like you do with live, outlook and Facebook...?
