While my 780 is being RMA'd a friend has offered me his old 6950 as a stopgap. Is the best way still to uninstall the card from device manager, uninstall the Nvidia software, shut down, swap card and install previously downloaded AMD drivers?

personally I wouldnt go nvidia>amd>nvidia without starting again.
can you not use your cpu graphics as a stopgap ? how long will your RMA take ?

Yes just do that and if you have problems then think about more drastic measures.

All this reformat/use DDU/safe mode stuff is rubbish to be honest, I changed from AMD to Nvidia system.

All I did was uninstall the AMD drivers, take out the AMD GPU(s), Install the Nvidia GPU and install the Nvidia drivers.

I just had problems installing a driver and the only way i could fix things was to use DDU in safe mode. It's the first time i have needed to use any driver cleaner software.

Its anything but rubish.. you may have been lucky and been able to switch without issue but ive have first hand seen many times what happens when left over drivers are in the system when installing a new card no matter the brand. The latest example i can give is with my 980ti.. if i dont clean the drivers with DDU my 3d clocks is stuck(wont go idle, results are higher temps and power consumption even when idle at desktop) after i have installed the driver i want..it happens EVERY time with the forceware 35*.**.. rebooting doesnt help ..only a proper clean.. and besides DDU is free (consider putting a donation to the guy) and it takes 2 minutes... 2 minutes well spend i would say.

Pretty much this.
Try it the normal way first, if you have problems try a driver sweep and if your whole system is borked only then resort to a re-install. But I've never had to do that.
The idea that going NVidia > AMD > NVidia pretty much necessitates an OS re-install is crazy.

I've never had to do anything but this, I've moved from AMD to Nvidia and from Nvidia to AMD and I just don't seem to get these problems everyone goes on about.

Generally it isn't needed though - over 100s of updates, reinstalls, etc. I've run into about 2 maybe 3 instances where I've needed ddu. Would be more inclined to use it swapping vendors though.

DDU is kind of a double-edge sword- if you actually have problem, it can possibly fix the problem for you; if you don't have a problem, it could cause you problem that you probably would not have in the first place if didn't use it :p

I've never had any problems doing that sort of thing. Heck, I've even run GPUs from different vendors alongside each other.

Personally I suspect issues are just as likely to occur from using 3rd party tweak applications without clearing down profiles etc after changing cards as they are from having remnants of an old driver lying around.

Windows 7 and above should have no problems recognising the new GPU and installing appropriate drivers.

Personally, I use DDU before any driver reinstall, and I will be using it this weekend when switching my card to an Nvidia again, but most of the time, it is not a requirement.
