Hey guys I am thinking of going from 2x1080SLI to 1x1080Ti

But I am abit of a noob... The wires I use at the moment for SLI are like this:

so they link off each other... If I remove a GPU il have 2 connectors just hanging about and I dont want that...

If I get a new single GPU will it come with the correct wires just for 1 card? so I unplug SLI power cables and then plug in new single GPU power cables and thats it?

Thank you

Given two SLI 1070’s - never mind 1080’s - will match a 1080ti (on games that support SLI of course) isn’t that going to effectively be quite a downgrade for you?

It will be a downgrade on games that use sli well, but it'll save on heat, money and noise so it may be worth it for some people.

As for the cables, it depends on what cables you have from your psu, do you have a modular psu with alternative cable options? i.e. Can you fully unplug that cable from the psu and use another one with less connectors?

Edit: just seen you have an rm1000x psu. Did it come with a box filled with alternate cables? One in there should do the trick for you.

well I have these...

Well it's not the yellow ones! :)
On the black ones you should see that one end plugs into the psu, and you're looking for something on the other end that will go into just one of the gpus. It'll be two 8-pin pcie connectors (your current cards are using 4 of the 8-pin connectors)

So you're a self declared noob, so I just thought I'd state the obvious which is don't start pulling cables out while the system is powered on, so turn it off, then figure out where that cable from your current gpus goes. Does it go straight back to the psu?

After following the cables yes they connect straght into the PSU... but they are very long and a lot longer than any cables I have... If I was to get a new GPU will it come with a cable long enough? or do I have to bridge it?

You won't get any long cables with a gpu, they are bespoke to your psu. The easiest thing is to remove your current gpus and use the last pair of connectors on the long cable to your new gpu, then tuck the spare pair away lower down. They may still be a little visible, but in practice I don't think they'll bother you.

is it safe to have extra unused wires hanging out? not been used?
Thank you

100% safe.
If you look in the end of the connectors you'll see the metal parts are recessed sufficiently that they're not going to touch anything.
It's completely standard in most computers for some spare connectors to be hanging around. Just tuck them away somewhere out of sight as much as possible
