Going Karting...

dont panic and jab the brakes, its very hard not to as its what your taught in a normal car to do an emergency stop, you will end up goin backwards , you have to be hard on the power and very gentle on the brakes, braking hard will mean losing lots of revs and these twin engine 4 strokes take an age to pick up, so tight hair pins best to tickle it round and hard on the power out.

Having no gears really annoys coming out of slow corners, as does people AFTER A DOZEN LAPS still not being able to brake in time, and smacking into your side breaking your rear axle thing.

Also, I wasn't taught to 'jab' the car brakes in an emergency stop :P Not that emergency stops are related to slowing for a corner in my mind, but I apologise i'm just picking, and there's too much picking.

Start vomitting after every meal to help lose weight, is my advice!
Oh and fold the rear seats down.

I went karting last week and having not ever driven a car before was a bit worried what it would be like, really enjoyed it once I got into it, took a while to find good lines and work out when / how much to brake. Got me enthused to get off my arse and learn to drive proper cars which I will probably do this summer.

Start slow, learn the lines, watch the locals. Smooth is faster than long drifts. Floor it only when you can keep it floored around corners and out onto the straight, no on/off/on/off upsetting the balance. Take your time passing people, the easiest way by far to end up last is to be too ambitious overtaking and end up in the barriers.

yes you are being picky ;) but its fun to watch novices go backwards the 1st time they kart :D

Wicked....

Might it be an idea to get someone else to pick me up and take me home.. ie: am I likely to be too battered to drive home comfortably?

Its a good idea to do that anyway, you have just been racing around a track then you get in ya car to go home :p

Tres vrai! I think half the field spun in the first few laps, at the most hilarious places! Overtaking was annoying as carrot cake though, when you're alongside someone, or a bit in front, and the person has tunnel vision. 50/50 I suppose!

Now I want to go again! Except outdoor this time. There seem to be a lot in the south, I must investigate and gather.

Went last year on my b'day with about 12 of my friends. Had an absolute blast. I braked before a corners and floored the acceleration and I ended up spinning :D

You'll enjoy it, just get used to the track and go for it

Cheers for the tips chaps. I think I'll cut out the snacking now while I have some time to prepare! :D The guys I work with are *really* competitive so it should be quite interesting. Apparently they usually give you seat inserts or something if you're quite tall... also some sort of corset thing to protect your ribs... sounds weird.

It's about a month away anyhow so just have to count down the days :D Thanks again, loads of really useful tips. Trampy dress down day it is then...
