I really want to not use a case on my iPhone 4, but I just haven't got the stones.

Who's dropped a nekkid iPhone 4?

From how high? On to what? What happened?

That's it really. I have this vision in my head of it exploding if dropped. Am I right?

I've been told that on its way to the ground, you see your stupid and sorry reflection in the screen just before it shatters into a million pieces.

I love my 3GS with the case off but I wouldn't go about with it off.

Spoke to a mate last night who dropped his from mid thigh level, smashed the screen. The glass is apparently the same stuff they use in aeroplane windows, but its thin as anything, and glued to the LCD so it can't bend to take the shock.

He got it replaced the next day for free however

This might not be what you're looking for but you can consider this option.

Applecare vs SquareTrade

Applecare - £61
2-years protection
accidental damage - no
water damage - no

SquareTrade - £49
3-years protection
accidental damage - yes
water damage - yes

Nice iphone case - £20-30

Take your pick.

I'm with squaretrade and when I dropped my iphone4 back in november, all I had to do was notify them, send it to them (free) and they fixed it for me and sent it back within 3 working days. The protection even continues despite already making a claim. A couple of days after receiving the phone I was contacted by squaretrade to ensure everything was ok and rest assured me if in the future I made a claim and phone was beyond repair, they would refund me £500 (cost of phone).

I'll probably sell the phone before the cover runs out but its great knowing if you drop your phone on the driveway or the bathtub you won't have to pay a penny to get it fixed.

Is that a US only thing or are you in the UK?

I mainly use a pouch with drop protection and only take the phone out if I'm using it. Never leave it laying about naked unless it's at home (carpets everywhere). Cases won't help if the screen hits an uneven surface, and 99% of people I know who've damaged theirs... it's always the screen getting smashed.

I dont use a case for a number of reasons:

1. I bought a case (leather folding) and it vignetted the camera, and pretty much doubled the width of the phone and weight.

2. The iphone is gorgeous design, industrial glass and metal. I dont want to hide it away. It's like folk that put throw sheets on their expensive couches, or poly covers on their car seats 'to keep it new looking' Damn. So new looking you cant even see it.

3. A case would prevent it from fitting in my car holder, and without a case it fits nicely into my trouser/jean front pocket. Cases are too kludgy.

As for dropping it - I've dropped it numerous times from a height of a couple of feet, e.g. off the edge of the bath, of from my lap to the floor when I forget it's on me and I stand up.

The other day an unfortunate set of circumstance led me to dropping it on tarmac and it chiped a bit out the edge of the glass beside the mute switch and a scratch on the antenna further down. I put it in my shirt pocket (which I usually never do) and shortly after bent down to look under my car (which I don't normally do) and it just slid out onto the ground.

My screens has some small scratch on it as a result of use, and so does the rear. Who cares? Not me.

And finally, the iphone is super smooth, I find resting it on things it majorly risky as it slides on just about any surface unless it's totally level. Even holding it vertically between fingers is diffilcult sometimes. You need Gecko fingers, seriously.

I would use a case if:
I could keep it on and fit it in my car holder,
it didn't bulk up the size/weight of it, so far I haven't found a suitable case.

Edit to add I just remembered the funniest thing - I was waiting in traffic and somebody was fiddling with their iphone as they cross the road, and had headphones hooked up as well. I don't know how it happened but he totally got messed up and the iphone went up and he kind of juggled it for what seemed like forever before finally losing it and smashing onto the ground and bouncing. His face was priceless!.

Haha I can picture that perfectly in my mind! :D

I use my iPhone 4 "naked" too, by the way. If it gets damaged, it's my own stupid fault.

The missus cleverly knocked it out my hand so it fell about 5 feet, only got a little crack and im about to get it replaced as the top mic is busted (before this fall)

My iphone 3g took a tumble down a load of rocks and survived relatively unscathed!

Been lucky methinks.

I've dropped mine a few times in the house (iPhone 4).

Oh, and it fell off my lap when I got out of the car at Morrisons. Aside from a Gelaskin sticker there's zero protection and no damage.

The world didn't end. Man up :p

My 3GS has had a few tumbles without a case on and has survived. Not sure I'd trust the iPhone 4 without a case though.

I use a slip case for the phone when its in the car or in my pocket.

When the phone is in use its out of the case, or on my desk at work it's ontop of the case.

I bought a bumper for the phone and hate it.

So naked when in use. In a slip/sock when its in my pocket or in the car.

never used mine with a case yet i am a clumsy ape

its scratched up and has a tiny tiny dent in the top corner on the alu , still looks and feels better than any iphone in a case...

if i ever crack the screen i will first try the apple store (woman next to me at genius bar got hers replaced for free and a mate has done too) but if they wont replace it i will use home contents insurance.

Just put a zagg shield on the front and back (sides aswell if you really want)... That'll stop minor scratches etc...

I've dropped my 3GS enough times to know that when I get my iPhone 4 in a few weeks (no I can't wait until the 5 I am afraid) that it will be in a case.

Naked iPhone 4 user here as well.

Haven't dropped it so can't comment, but the cases are ugly so that's my reason for not getting one!
