So I'm about to embark on an adventure to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and finally Hong Kong. Any dos, don'ts? Anything I should take/leave behind?

Cheers

Don't take the "speed-boat" in Laos from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang or if you do, do not sit at the back of the boat next to the engine, it has the least amount of leg room and of course an engine next to your ear for 6 hours or so.

Do rent a motorbike and travel around the hills if you go to Huay Xai... Can't remember which direction it was but I believe if you turn left after you walk up the hill from the border post in Laos across from the Thai border.

Do go up to the waterfalls in Luang Prabang if you are heading there.

The bus from Luang Prabang to Vientiane can be a bit hairy too, driver had to drive around a little land slide and almost went off the cliff :p

Sweet Choice!

I did Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam a few years back, Vietnam was my favourite!

Have you got a route planned? We did Cambodia, then from Siem Riep we went to Saigon and all up the coast to Hannoi, doing all the interesting spots along the way. The Tunnels, Hospital cave, shooting AK's (and the old M40 bolt action), the War Crimes Museum, spectacular Diving in Nah Trang, exploring different places on motorbike, Hoi An, Halong Bay, sitting drinking local brews (bia hoi) with the locals at the side of the road etc etc

My favourite place was Saigon.

Just enjoy your hols and enjoy those 1million dong notes!

I did that trip 10+ years ago . . .along the Mekhong? Was just a dusty little village and we were all on the slow boat to Luang Prabange when we had to stop there the night . . bought some opium and missed the ferry the next day lol... had to convince someone to take us on his speedboat...was a much more fun trip but ******* scary!

Vang Vien in Laos is one of my fave places in the world . . . .when I was there it was beautiful and really laid back. Unforunately I hear it's been ruined now by tourism but probably still worth a look

From what I hear, you go there to "tube" now.

Yeh I did tubing there and it was lush . . .quiet river and a nice float along it. Now I hear it's covered with bars and full of rowdy tourists getting drunk and dying from jumping in the water. Such a shame as it really was an amazing place

I did a similar route, also got stuck in Hong Kong for a week due to that volcano in Iceland.

Take a silk sleeping liner, they are amazing! I carried a mosquito net with me but never used it (hostels tend to have them anyway, plus you can buy them everywhere).
